We at CTAM Texas are very thankful for our members and the support that they have given us throughout 2002. I would like to personally thank Char Beales, Nancy McMurray and Chris Galius who all gave of their time by volunteering as judges and helping us have a spectacular first CTAM Chili Cook Off. But it wouldn’t be fair to thank our judges and not mention Cathy Dunn, our Chili Queen and Chairperson for the cook off, and her committee. And then there are the teams of “gourmet chili chefs” who drove, or in some cases flew all the way to Frisco, Texas in order to wow us with their expertise. I hope you enjoy the photos from the event, later in this newsletter.   If there is one constant, it is change. So earlier this month we partnered with our friends at WICT and brought you Grace Killelea who helped provide us with tools for handling the changes that keep multiplying around us. These annual development seminars are our way of giving something back to the cable community that supports us.   And that brings us to the winter holidays. Once again we will be sponsoring our holiday party – but this time at a new locale! Look inside for all of the details. Please bring your new or used coats and blankets and we will again donate them to the Austin Street Shelter and give something back to the community around us.   And that’s just a little of what you have to look forward to as the year rounds the corner and CTAM Texas brings it home for the holidays.   Victoria

CTAM of Texas Quarterly Great Food and Fun at the First Annual Chili Cook-off Well, CTAM TX wanted something different for a signature event. MSO’s and programmers were consolidating with lightening speed and we knew we had to turn to something other than the traditional CEO roundtable – as all the CEO’s were vanishing. A TX Chili Cook Off …. I replied in the back of the room and boom…. SOLD October 11th started out cloudy and cold but the heavens opened up and we had a glorious day for our event at the Westin Stonebriar Resort in Frisco, TX. We had over 20 teams in sponsorship and cooking formats as well as 50 individuals which brought our crowd to 120 people. 14 teams actually arrived around 9am to start the set up of their booths complete with imported duck statues wearing Mardi gras beads, Tribune’s barrels of hay, INSP’s Mexican flags, Showtime’s Willie Nelson costumes and the cast of HBO’s TheSoprano’s in Carmela’s kitchen. The competition heightened when the Cox Communications folks from Tyler rolled in with Waydestock and the Van Peeps – complete with concert t-shirts, dew rags, banners and band posters. They were being challenged across the field by the pirates of Grande /SourceSuite who also shared a border with the Crazy Cajuns from CBC Marketing Group. If there had not been the amazing aroma of chili simmering all day long in such unusual vessels like the original pot of the Show “Rawhide” as well as Coleman stoves- we could have just had a grand event with all the costumes, booth décor and general Texas Smack talking. Programmers and operators duked it out over the actual best tasting chili, the hottest chili (ai-chi-wawa), best kitchen décor and showmanship. The rules indicated that the chili (no beans allowed in TX chili) had to simmer for 1 to 4 hours so --- we had plenty of time to talk shop, survey the competition and have a darn good time. We rounded up a great cast of judges to top off the event – Char Beales, President and CEO of CTAM, Nancy McMurray – VP of Communications of the Texas Association and Chris Galius , an anchor from the local ABC affiliate. They had to adhere to strict rules such as NO Beans and all meat had to be prepared on site!! The event would not have been a success with out the addition of the RAMBLERS – compliments of Great American Country. This band took us to new levels as they sang their hearts out and truly jumped into the spirit of the competition. The first annual Chili Cook Off was truly a success completed with a nice check going to Dallas Can to help the underprivileged youth of Dallas. Who knows… could Willie and Waylon make this an annual event with us? We look forward to more good times next year as most of the teams are returning have committed and the competition has begun.

CTAM of Texas Quarterly Grace Killelea, an accomplished speaker, chose the topic of “Making Change Work” to address a small but enthusiastic group of CTAM-TX and WICT members at the Mustang Café on November 14th.   “Change is not a choice” stated Grace in her opening. In order to make change work for you, you must plan for change before it happens. Everyone has their own “Change DNA” – how they deal with change. If you thrive on change and don’t always have a plan, you are a “High Change” person. However, if you always need a plan and need to be involved in the process, you are a “Low Change” person. Steps for managing change: 1. Know your “Change DNA” 2. Do a personal assessment, know what you are capable of doing, what you are good at, know what others are good at. Determine what other people are doing. Develop relationships vs. gathering contacts 3. Focus on forward movement Plan. Know your resources; financial, emotional and physical. Determine what you really want to be doing with your life. Create Vision and Mission Statements for yourself. What is your personal brand? How do people in the industry view you? Allow yourself to think outside of the box. Grace left us with her own mission statement and demonstrated her brand when speaking to our group. It is to Educate, Empower and Inspire. CTAM of Texas Quarterly Have we got a deal for you? It’s Holiday Fundraiser time again. This year’s event is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11th from 7:00 pm to 12:00 am at the groovy Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum – Dallas, TX. Retro 70’s is the theme with prizes for many lucky people who play LET’s MAKE A DEAL – so you better save those psychedelic Halloween costumes. The Gypsy Tea Room is located at 2513 Main Street, in Deep Ellum, (214) 747-9663. There will be scrumptious food, desserts and complimentary drink tickets, so don’t miss this far out event.  Admission to the event for each person is a coat or blank (personal items are also encouraged). All proceeds from the Party as well as the coats and blankets will again benefit the Austin Street Shelter in downtown Dallas.   Sponsorships for the “Let’s make a Deal” stage doors, DJ, fortunetellers, photo buttons food and drink stations are now available.
