It was created from countries that were a part of the British Empire or had strong links with Britain. The Commonwealth promotes international understanding and world peace. The full name for the Commonwealth is the Commonwealth of Nations, and it was previously known as the British Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth Games 2010 Motto "Come Out and Play" That's the motto for the Delhi CG 2010. It's an appeal to people of all ages to come forward and participate, become a part of it. LRDC CONTRIBUTION BY SHREYA -MBA IB 6 Bidding : Bidding Two principle bids for 2010 Commonwealth Games were – Delhi in India Hamilton in Canada Delhi bid won by a margin of 46 votes to 22 confirming India’s first successful bid for the Games. India shifted the balance in its favor in the second round of voting… They promised to provide US $ 100,000 to each participating country, along with Air tickets, boarding, lodging and transport. Before this in 2006 the Commonwealth Games held at Melbourne with having the population of 3.7 millions. Special training zones are developed that would help the athletes to do their practices before the matches. Official estimates the two million foreign tourists, and 3.5 million tourists are likely to arrive in the Delhi during the event. With more than a dozen other Commonwealth Games venues also behind schedule, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the weekend ordered an investigation. That begs the question of why Singh waited so long. This is the first time tennis will be part of the Commonwealth Games It has been estimated that there are over 415000 daily wage workers working on the projects related to 2010 Commonwealth Games. It is unfortunate that most of them are being paid less than minimum wages. Commonwealth Games is the only multinational event in which the home nations of the United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland – send separate teams to the Commonwealth Games unlike at Olympics. This does not include the amount that the capital has already spend on the infrastructure development in the city. It has been estimated that over $1.94 Billion Dollars was spent on modernizing the Capital’s International Airport. It has been predicted that the Commonwealth Games at Delhi will increase the capital’s GDP by 49 percent and that means it will become the richest city in the country followed by Mumbai. The year 2010 will be the first time ever GDP of Delhi will be more than Mumbai since the country’s Independence. The 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games will be the first games ever to be recognized as “Green Commonwealth Games”. This is despite the fact that there had been a felling of “heritage trees” in the forest area to make way for the game facilities.
