Current Alcohol Drinking Status for Adults Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Infrequent Moderate Heavier Nondrinker Light Source: Health Behaviors of Adults: United States, 1999-2001, a report that uses data from the 1999-2001 National Health Interview Surveys (NHIS) that is conducted annually by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. All data were self-reported and collected through computer-assisted personal interviews (CAPI). The report is based on a total of 96, 501 completed interviews with sample adults aged 18+, representing an overall sample adult response rate of 71.8% for the 3 years combined. Estimates are age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population using age groups: 18-44, 45-64 and 65+.
Note: Current alcohol drinking status—Nondrinker is defined as no drinks in the past year (includes both former drinkers and lifetime abstainers); infrequent is defined as 12 or more drinks in lifetime and 1-11 drinks in past year; light is defined as 12 or more drinks in lifetime and 3 drinks or fewer per week; moderate is defined as more than 3 and up to 14 drinks per week for men and more than 3 and up to 7 drinks per week for women; heavier is defined as more than 14 drinks per week for men and more than 7 drinks per week for women.
Note: The NHIS defines adults as those age 18 and older. However, Anheuser-Busch does not promote, approve or condone underage drinking. 95% of adults are moderate, infrequent, light drinkers or do not drink at all
