MARC and Museums:

MARC and Museums Key access points to museum records are taxonomic and geographic; therefore, FEOL bibliographic database records were enhanced to reflect these foci.

Taxonomic Enhancements:

Taxonomic Enhancements Added a new 754: : Taxonomic Information Field Populated from the Integrated Taxonomic Information System http://www.its.used.go/plastron/its/index.html developed by the Biological Research Division of the U.S. Geological Survey

Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS):

Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) ITIS was designed “to improve the organization of and access to standardized nomenclature” including hierarchical classification. ITIS includes documented taxonomic information of flora and fauna from both aquatic and terrestrial habitats with a U.S. emphasis.

Geographic Enhancements:

Geographic Enhancements MARC records were also enhanced to contain geo-referenced fields that could be correlated to locations given in specimen records: country, state/province, county, and named places.

Geographic Fields added to MARC::

Geographic Fields added to MARC: 034: : |d Western latitude in decimal degrees |f Northern longitude in decimal degrees 752: : |a Country |b State |c County |d Named Place 651: 4: |a County |z HUC# |x HUC 651: 4: |a County |z FIPS# |x FIPS

752 Field populated from the:

752 Field populated from the Geographic Names Information System(GNIS) (http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/index.html), U.S.G.S. provides an authoritative source for the closest named place term and a central latitude/longitude point in decimal degrees, as well as in degrees, minutes, seconds.

GNIS data elements:

GNIS data elements Feature Name Everglades National Park Type Park County Monroe FIPS (St) 12 FIPS (Co) 87 Prim Long DD(w) -80.9375 Prim Lat DD(n) 25.3125

651: 4: HUC codes:

651: 4: HUC codes Aquatic species records often have drainage basin information. Frequently, basin names correlate to Hydrologic Unit Codes (HUCs) Reference: http://wwwrvares.er.usgs.gov/wqn96cd/wqn/wq/huc_name.txt

651: 4: FIPS codes:

FIPS codes are from the National Institute of Standards and Technology and consist of coded numbers for states and counties, e.g., Alachua County, FL is 12001 651: 4: FIPS codes

FEOL Thesaurus http://susdl.fcla.edu/lfnh/thesauri/feol2/index.htm was constructed from 4 others: ENVOC (multilingual thesaurus of environmental terms) Fish and Wildlife Reference Service Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts Fire Ecology Thesaurus California Resources Agency Environtmenal Resources (CERES) Thesaurus

Slide31:

The Florida's Natural Communities Thesaurus is a separate file with terms and relationships derived from: Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI), Florida DOT's Florida Land Use, Cover and Forms Classification System, January 1999 edition, and Federal Wetlands Classification.

Can we get there from here?:

Can we get there from here? Need to explore the use of the geographic enhancements in a GIS setting. Can we use the 034 and 651 fields? In terms of geospatial attributes, we currently have central points not polygons. No way of handling Lake Wales Ridge, Gulf of Mexico, etc.
