TRUMAN’S EARLY LIFE Born on May 8, 1884 Son of John Anderson Truman and Martha Ellen Young Worked in the mailing room of the Kansas City Star and was a book-keeper in two major Kansas City Banks Moved to Grandview in 1906 and operated the family farm

TRUMAN AS A SOLDIER: 

TRUMAN AS A SOLDIER Member of the Missouri National Guard from 1905 to 1911 Became a lieutenant Sent to France in 1918 and commanded a artillery battery in various campaigns Honorably discharged in 1919

COUNTY JUDGE Supported by “Big Tom” Pendergast Served as judge from 1922 to 1924 Served as presiding county judge from 1926 to 1934

U.S. SENATOR: 

U.S. SENATOR Elected to the United States Senate in 1934 Directed an investigation of Railroad Finances A major result of this was the Transportation Act of 1940 Was re-elected to the Senate in 1940

THE TRUMAN COMMITTEE: 

THE TRUMAN COMMITTEE Although the U.S. was not formally involved in World War II, the nation’s defense spending rose to huge sums The Truman committee was set up to investigate the defense spending as it occured In 1941 the Senate established the Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program

VICE-PRESIDENT: 

VICE-PRESIDENT In 1944, many Democratic leaders believed that Roosevelt would not live through a fourth term so the nomination for Vice-President was crucial The delegates nominated Truman on the second ballot Truman held the office of Vice-President for 83 days

FIRST TERM AS PRESIDENT: 

During World War II, Truman ordered American fliers to drop an atomic bomb on Japan. The first bomb fell on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 three days later the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. In 1947, Truman issued the Truman Doctorine guaranteeing american aid to free nations resisting Communist sabotage during the Cold War FIRST TERM AS PRESIDENT

SECOND TERM AS PRESIDENT: 

SECOND TERM AS PRESIDENT In 1949, the United States, Canada, France, Britain, and 8 other nations signed the North Atlantic Treaty, an agreement that an attack on one member would be considered an attack on all. In 1950 during the Korean War Truman decided to intervene to save South Korea’s independence. He sent U.S. planes and ships to help South Korea. On March 29, 1952, Truman announced that he would not seek re-election
