Teen Dating Abuse Campaign Commissioned Teenage Research Unlimited (TRU) to conduct a survey on teen attitudes towards dating violence Unveiled results at the National Press Club in Washington DC Announced creation of a national high school curriculum focused on teen dating abuse in conjunction with Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), Break the Cycle and an Advisory Board of educators, domestic violence experts, government officials, medical professionals, survivors and corporate leaders GOAL: Raise awareness of the issue of teen dating violence in the United States

Teen Dating Abuse Survey: Key Findings 1 in 3 teenagers report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, choked or physically hurt by their partner Nearly 1 in 5 teenage girls who have been in a relationship said a boyfriend had threatened violence or self-harm if presented with a break-up 1 in 4 teenage girls who have been in relationships reveal they have been pressured to perform oral sex or engage in intercourse More than 1 in 4 teenage girls in a relationship report enduring repeated verbal abuse 80% of teens regard verbal abuse as a “serious issue” for their age group If trapped in an abusive relationship, 73% said they would turn to a friend for help; but only 33% who have been in or known about an abusive relationship said they have told anyone about it

Teen Dating Abuse Campaign: Results/Message Reach More than 15,000,000 people through 20 print and online publications including MTV.com, The Dallas Morning News, ABCNews.com, NBC.com, The Boston Herald and The San Diego Union Tribune More than 50,000,000 viewers of national TV programs such as NBC’s Today Show, MSNBC, CNN Headline News, BET Nightly News, and CNN American Morning and of news shows in 10 of the top 15 DMAs learned about the survey report and the issue Local news shows in 74 additional markets and on radio shows in New York, Phoenix and Boston Received more than 200 emails and calls asking for information about the issue, inquiring about the curriculum pilot and praising the initiative
