Historical report of collaboration 2002-Present Since 2002 , John Scottus, Ireland has been fundamental in the construction of over 20 schools in villages of Calcutta and West Bengal

Since 2002, Loreto Day School, Sealdah, Calcutta, has and continues to provide all manners of support to this school building project

Through this joint project, the possibility of quality education has been extended to more than 20,000 village children Schools often become the centre of community activity and support

Each academic year, a team of up to 40 students and teachers from John Scottus come to live and work in the villages for up to one month and provide manpower, expertise, funds and material for the building of the schools

Throughout the year in Ireland, the students and staff of John Scottus are involved in fundraising activities that range from tapping into corporate contacts to donating money from part time work, sponsored sporting and cultural activities and also private donations

Loreto Sealdah uses its on the ground expertise, experience and local contacts to provide invaluable support to help coordinate the project and ensure that the minimum amount of problems occur whilst in Calcutta

Pre-construction : 

Pre-construction Target surveys are carried out by Loreto Sealdah in local communities to identify villages where schools are urgently required Meetings are held with Local authorities and NGO’s to garner necessary support for building project Teachers are selected to begin training

Post-construction : 

Post-construction Loreto provides educational material to schools Syllabus is jointly prepared Ongoing teacher training is done through Loreto Sealdah’s existing Shikshalaya Prokalpa program Follow up studies, Progress and Status reports and also done regularly

It has the urban fringe of Calcutta on one side and the remote riverine villages in the Sundarbans, a vast tract of forest and saltwater swamp forming the lower part of the Ganges Delta, extending about 160 miles (260 km) along the Bay of Bengal from the Hooghly River Estuary (India) to the Meghna River Estuary in Bangladesh.
