As a major element of the Olympic Park, this will provide accommodation for athletes and officials from around the world during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Village will be at the northern end of Beijing’s north-south axis along which many of the city’s historic sites such as the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven are located. The 66-hectare sire will have two separate areas, one residential and the other international.

As well as the apartments, the residantial area will have clinic, dining halls, a multi-functional library, an entertainment centre and recreational sports zone. The apartments in the Olympic Village have a total floor area og 370,000 sq.m., all permanent structures os similar design, including 22 buildings of six storeys and 20of nine storeys. All the apartments are sold by auction before the Olympic Games begin, so that after the games the area will be transformed into a residential community and handed over to the new owners.

The Olympic Village will provide safe and comfortable facilities to help athletes achieve their peak performance during the Games. The Residential Quarter located in the western part of the Village consists of apartment buildings, dining halls, and other facilities. The International Quarter located in the eatern part of the Village will provide leisure facilities and cultural activities for athletes. After the Games, the Village will become a residential area.

 On the morning of June 26, 2005, construction of the Olympic Village for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games formally commenced. As a major part of the Olympic Green (Park), the Olympic Village will provide accommodation for athletes and officials from around the world during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Olympic Village erects at the northern end of the north-south axis of Beijing city, along which many of Beijing's historic sites (the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and Qianmen Gate, etc) are located. The 66-hectare Olympic Village comprises two separate areas, namely the residential area and the international area. To the north of the Olympic Village lies the Olympic Forest Park, while to the south of it are the main competition venues. The surrounding environment combines pleasant natural scenery with convenient traffic.

The Olympic Village will open two weeks prior to the opening of the Olympic Games. By then, 16,000 Olympic athletes and 7,000 Paralympic athletes, along with Games officials, will stay in the Village that will all kinds of services ranging from boarding to recreation and entertainment. Beijing's Olympic Village will set record by housing the largest number of athletes for the longest duration of time in Olympic history. The design, development and construction of the Olympic Village fully reflect the ideals encapsulated in the 'high-level Olympics with distinguishing features' theme and the concept of 'Green Olympics,' 'High-tech Olympics' and 'People's Olympics.'

The Olympic Village is designed to be an environment-friendly home for athletes and officials, where they will experience the splendid culture of China and the international-level living conditions. After the Olympic Games, the Olympic Village will become a residential community, setting an example for post-Games development. The Olympic Village is planned to be completed in the end of 2007 and will be formally put under the management of BOCOG in early 2008. The apartments will be auctioned even before the Olympic Games begins. After the Olympic Games, the Olympic Village will be transformed into a residential community and handed over to the owners.
