The enigma of the CIO:

The enigma of the CIO Presented by Professor Dan Remenyi dan.remenyi@tcd.ie

IS began not so long ago:

IS began not so long ago Computers really came into our collective conscience in the late 1950s or early 1960s with radio and newspaper publicity By the mid-60s they were already on the way to becoming well established Inclined to be managed by young engineers or maths graduates

Young engineers and maths graduates:

Young engineers and maths graduates Highly talented people but not always as mature as they could have been Computer management was not really an issue IQ does not buy too much in business except in specific circumstances – maybe EQ is what is required

The proposition:

The proposition Information is at the heart of all corporate activities, but its power is often not appreciated There is sometimes a culture gap Are IS people different? My contention is that Yes ---- IS people are different Successful IS people are different and this is most apparent in the CIO

The Successful CIO:

The Successful CIO There are many attributes required to become and to sustain a successful CIO position Versatility Vision Fast reactions Tenacity It has been suggested that this job is too big for one individual!

The Chameleon Metaphor:

The Chameleon Metaphor

CIO and Versatility:

CIO and Versatility The CIO needs to be multi-dimensional A technology champion A business strategist A technologist A leader An integrator An impresario A good corporate citizen A friend to all

The CIO and Vision :

The CIO and Vision Looking outward for new developments Watching what other are doing – competitors Keeping an eye on what is happening in the firm Keeping an eye on other things too

The CIO and fast reaction:

The CIO and fast reaction Although generally slow in motion the chameleon can strike very fast indeed and when necessary the tongue moves with amazing speed

The CIO and Tenacity zygodactylous toes and tail:

The CIO and Tenacity zygodactylous toes and tail The ability to hang on to a branch is quite outstanding due to its zygodactylous toes (having two toes pointing forward and two backward) and its remarkable coiled tail

Enter the CIO:

The way forward:

The way forward CIOs need recognition for the highly complex and demanding role they play in organisations. Focusing on some of the attributes of the Chameleon may be useful to enhance understanding to the CIO role The key issues are Versatility, Vision, Fast Reactions and Tenacity
