Slide 3:

NEW CUTURAL CENTER in LOS ANGELES Walt Disney Concert Hall is conceived as part of the cultural hub in the center of downtown Los Angeles.

Slide 4:

HOME of LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC The Walt Disney Concert Hall – the future home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic adjacent to the extant Music Center – is Gehry’s most ambitious large-scale project in Los Angeles.

Slide 5:

ESTABLISHED a SENSE of PLACE Like many of Gehry’s larger public structures, the hall established a sense of place. This is accomplished not only by the building’s intriguing design but also by extensive gardens and outdoor performance spaces.

Slide 6:

ESTABLISHED a SENSE of PLACE The concert hall is conceived as part of the cultural hub in the center of downtown Los Angeles, an area that is home to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Slide 7:

PROCESS of PROJECT The design of concert hall provided striking contrast to create functional building that serve the clients. A sketch of Walt Disney Concert Hall

Slide 8:

PROCESS of PROJECT The model of the original proposal

Slide 9:

PROCESS of PROJECT The initial model of the final proposal The initial design underwent significant modifications as the architect consulted with acousticians, several prominent classical musicians, and visited some of the best concert halls around the world.

Slide 10:

PROCESS of PROJECT The initial model of the final proposal

Slide 11:

PROCESS of PROJECT asdasdsa Further design produced an auditorium that is shaped like a box, bowed in the middle and raised on either end. The top view of the final proposal model

Slide 12:

PROCESS of PROJECT asdasdsa That structure tailored to convey orchestral sound as effectively as possible. The initial model of the final proposal

Slide 13:

PROCESS of PROJECT The entrance now rotated to the corner of First Street and South Grand Avenue, the concert hall more openly engages pedestrian traffic.

Slide 14:

PROCESS of PROJECT The main view of the final proposal model

Slide 15:

PROCESS of PROJECT The street view of the final proposal model

Slide 16:

PROCESS of PROJECT Gehry considered a combination of limestone and steel sheathing for the exterior. The final proposal model at an exhibition

Slide 17:

PROCESS of PROJECT The building was conceived of all aspects of the interior, which bear the architect’s signature focus upon simple materials. Some views of the interior in model

Slide 18:

PROCESS of PROJECT Some views of the exterior in model and real life During the design process, the architect tested the possibility of casting projections onto the reflective exterior during the evenings.

Slide 19:

PROCESS of PROJECT Casting projection effects on the surface of exterior materials

Slide 20:

SUPPORTED by CATIA software The most profound impact upon the exterior of the hall has been made by CATIA software, which enabled the design and construction of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (1991-1997) A digital design construction of CATIA software

Slide 21:

SUPPORTED by CATIA software 3D model of the design construction

Slide 22:

SUPPORTED by CATIA software CATIA significantly reduces projected construction costs and, most important, makes such unconventional, spectacular forms an engineering possibility.

Slide 23:

SUPPORTED by CATIA software “I want buildings that have passion in them, that have feeling in them, that make people feel something, even if they get mad at them.” Frank O. Gehry , 1997

Slide 24:

THE HEART of CONCERT HALL Clad entirely in wood, the 2300-seat auditorium recalls the warm surfaces of a violin. The complete auditorium

Slide 25:

THE HEART of CONCERT HALL Thirty hall-shaped study models, each scale 1/16”

Slide 26:

THE HEART of CONCERT HALL After making a small-scale model of his desired hall shape, Gehry solicited acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota’s critique of the design’s acoustical properties, and he incorporated Toyota’s structural suggestions in a new model iteration. Some sketches of the auditorium and the outdoor performance space

Slide 27:

Over 50 models were produced to achieve the desired effect. The final shape reconciled the strict symmetry that Toyota advised to produce a warm sound with the curvilinear form that Gehry preferred. THE HEART of CONCERT HALL

Slide 28:

THE HEART of CONCERT HALL The platform stage is surrounded by 360 degrees of seating. By blurring the physical separation between audience and performer, Gehry assigns the space an intimacy that is unusual for a hall of such a large capacity.

Slide 29:

THE HEART of CONCERT HALL With the assistance of acousticians, a large-scale model of the interior was built, and tests were conducted in which musicians played their instruments inside the space in order to determine the path of the sound.

Slide 30:

THE HEART of CONCERT HALL The seats rise from the stage front to the back of the room and wood strips billow from the ceiling and fall in a cluster around the tiller -like pipe organ behind the stage. The curved wooden pipes of instrument, designed by Gehry and organ builder Manuel Rosales, integrate it into the environment of the hall, where a conventional organ would have looked out of place in relation to the dynamic interior elements.

Slide 31:

THE HEART of CONCERT HALL The interior space and elements were then adjusted accordingly. The stage of the auditorium

Slide 34:

THE HEART of CONCERT HALL Plan of third level Gehry has located circulation areas, small rooms, a café, and retail space in the pockets between the outer building façade and the auditorium structure.

Slide 36:

There are not only complimentary but also criticality analysis about the building.
