Dr. Gruessner has over 600 publications in medical journals and books to his credit and has served in a surgical leadership capacity for over 15 years.

Dr. Rainer Gruessner, in his tenure as the Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona, has brought the department into the forefront of general and transplant surgery. In seven years since becoming Department Chair, Dr. Gruessner hired 70 new faculty members, six of whom are nationally reputed division chiefs, and created several new clinics and programs, all in line with his vision of providing the best patient-focused care with noninvasive techniques and robot assistance if necessary.:

His education has not ceased since then. He has published over 600 abstracts, manuscripts, and book chapters. He has also edited two widely-used textbooks on transplantation and is at work on a third one on innovation in surgery. His groundbreaking research has contributed to a new trend to noninvasive, patient-oriented treatment .
