Physical Fitness is the ability of the body’s systems to function efficiently and effectively. Those who are physically fit have the ability to “carry out daily tasks without vigor and alertness, without undue fatigue, and with ample energy to enjoy leisure-time pursuits and to meet unforeseen emergencies.” COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS : COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS There are 5 basic components of physical fitness which involve your heart, lungs, strength, endurance, and agility or flexibility. CARDIORESPIRATORY ENDURANCE : CARDIORESPIRATORY ENDURANCE The ability to do moderately strenuous activity over a period of time. It reflects how well your heart and lungs work together to supply oxygen to your body during exertion and exercise. Also called aerobic fitness. MUSCULAR ENDURANCE : MUSCULAR ENDURANCE The ability to hold a particular position for a sustained period of time or repeat a movement many times. This could be the capability required to hold a two-pound weight above your head for five minutes or the effort required to lift that weight 20 consecutive times. MUSCULAR STRENGTH : MUSCULAR STRENGTH The ability to exert maximum force, such as lifting the heaviest weight you can budge, one time. It is possible to have muscular strength in one area, say your arms, while lacking strength in another area such as your legs. FLEXIBILITY : FLEXIBILITY The ability to move a joint through its full range of motion; the elasticity of the muscle. This is how limber or supple you are. BODY COMPOSITION : BODY COMPOSITION The proportion of fat in your body compared to your bone and muscle. It does not refer to your weight in pounds or your figure. SKILL-RELATED PHYSICAL FITNESS : SKILL-RELATED PHYSICAL FITNESS Skill-related physical fitness is the ability to perform well in physical activities. There are 6 basic skill-related fitness components. AGILITY : AGILITY The ability to change direction rapidly with control. BALANCE : BALANCE The ability to maintain equilibrium while stationary or moving. COORDINATION : COORDINATION The ability to execute movements smoothly and efficiently. POWER : POWER The ability to produce force at a fast speed; a combination of strength and speed are usually applied during a short period. REACTION TIME : REACTION TIME The time elapsed between the administration of a stimulus and the body’s response to the stimulus. SPEED : SPEED The ability to move the body quickly. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY : PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Any bodily movement that is produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure. EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY : EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Walking Running Cycling Dancing PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PYRAMID : PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PYRAMID BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY : BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Increase longevity. Enhance cardiovascular function Maintain a desirable body composition. Achieve functional independence. Reduce risk of muscle and joint injury. BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY : BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Possibly help alleviate mental illness. Reduce susceptibility to depression and anxiety. Helps manage stress more effectively. THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY : THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Regular activity, fitness and exercise, are critical for the health and well being of people of all ages. Research shows that everyone , young or old can benefit from regular exercise, either vigorous or moderate. Even very old adults can improve mobility and function through physical activity. It should be a priority for everyone. Millions of people suffer from chronic illnesses, that can significantly improve through activity. Exercise reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, and high blood pressure. People who are active outlive those who are inactive.
