A Modern Day Miracle

Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey delivers just over 5500 births a year Only one baby a year on average dies after a normal birth In the last four years out of 22,000 births only two cases have been reported where a baby stopped breathing after birth Jessica was one of these cases

Jessica Grace Anderson was born at 5:55 am on the 11th January 2013

Approximately 30 minutes later Jessica stopped breathing and had a complete system shutdown

6:27 am - In the delivery suite a crash call was made and 8 medical staff rushed into the room (paediatric response team)

6:30 am - Jessica was noted as being pale and floppy with no respiratory effort 6:31 am - CPR commenced 6:37 am - Jessica was gasping infrequently every one to two minutes 6:38 am – First attempt at ventilation was made, when chest compressions stopped her heart rate dropped dangerously low

6:42 am – Jessica remained cyanosed (blue) with no respiratory effort 6:44 am – Adrenalin administered

7:12 am – CPR continued 7:14 am – Another shot of adrenalin was administered 7:30 am – Jessica was placed on a ventilator but was unable to cope 7:41 am – Again tried to put Jessica on a ventilator but was unable to cope

7:45 am - Jessica had a seizure through lack of oxygen 7:50 am - Jessica was chemically paralysed 8:00 am - Jessica was transferred to a ventilator and stabilised 8:40 am – Intensive Care retrieval team from St Peters Hospital arrived Jessica was given CPR (oxygen and chest compressions) for a total time of 1h 45 minutes

1:00 pm - Jessica was transported from Frimley Park Hospital to St Peters Hospital to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit, even though she was stabilised she had been too poorly to move before then

“You need to go away and prepare yourselves as you may have to make some difficult decisions over the next 24 hours” “Your child is in a very critical condition and there is a very high risk of both morbidity and mortality”

Jessica was cooled to 33 degrees for 72 hours to prevent further brain damage Jessica was warmed up over a 24 hour period Jessica developed an infection while in ICU Jessica suffered from lack of circulation in her legs
