People get chosen for AVID through an application and interview process. Schedule : Schedule Weekly Learning Logs- reflect on what we learned through the week. Daily Learning Logs- Reflect on what we learned that class period. Tutorials- Using the Socratic Method we discuss things we have learned that we do not understand fully. Logic Puzzle- During motivational Friday, we solve a logic puzzle that helps our critical thinking skills. Meet Authors- We were honored to meet Ashley Rhodes-Courter who discussed her book, Three Little Words Leadership Workshops- Through a writing contest, 2 students were able to go to USF to learn the benefits of being a leader. Interactive Notebook- Our note book is divided into AVID 411, Bellwork, Quick Writes, and College scholarships. Philosophical Chairs- discuss controversial subjects in a calm, professional way. Slide 4: AVID is for students who are determined to reach their full potential. Example: The “Before and After” Avid program is for High School seniors who draw themselves as students before AVID and draw themselves After Avid. Slide 5: AVID pushes students outside of their usual way of thinking by using strategies such as: The Socratic Method-A process where you ask questions to answer someone’s questions. A student (who’d prefer to remain anonymous) started AVID with D’s and C’s, and is now making A’s and B’s Slide 8: AVID has given students the confidence they need to reach their goals, and create higher expectations for themselves. Pre-AVID, a student never considered going to a university. Now, this student is determined to be a gator at the University Of Florida. Slide 9: It has turned us into leaders, and has helped us change the impressions we’ve made on our teachers. Example: SLANT Slide 10: It has taught us how to make good first impressions on people who could be a window to our success. Example: We learned that Good eye-contact and a confident handshake can impress many future bosses.
