Theaters Restaurants Trains MoviesManual Profile Updates: Manual Profile Updates As a user moves from one physical location to another he must constantly change the profile in his device He often forgets to reset profile after leaving quiet zones Profiles only affect the way in which incoming calls/messages are announced No control over communication preferences SMS, chat, voice, IP, pager The challenge is to identify the location of the user automatically and update his presence information based on location and pre-defined user preferences.Presence Zone Concept: Presence Zone Concept Automatic identification of the user’s physical location Cellular triangulation, GPS, Bluetooth, RFID, Infrared … Automatic enrichment of location data with contextual information Zone/venue registers with Provider and location & context are correlated Instead of identifying only physical coordinates on a map, identify that the user is in Lowe’s Theater, St. Mary’s Hospital ICU Ward, Town Hall, etc and whether the zone is a “Quiet Zone” Call/message routing & transformation based on location + context User no longer needs to manually update the profile of his communication device when changing venue Enforcement of zone’s communication etiquette – i.e. Quiet Zones Ability to publish location & location context to those with “Presence Aware” devices Ex: Instant Messaging Buddy List could display “Home, Office, Car, Public Transportation, Quiet Zone” rather than just “available, offline”. If the user has authorized the publication of this informationPresence Zones - Examples: Presence Zones - Examples Home – Family home phone, if not busy Otherwise personal cell phone or pager Office – Office phone, if not busy Otherwise internet chat or email Car – Cell phone (voice only) Definitely do not want to answer SMSs while driving. They should be converted to voicemail messages Theater, restaurant, & other “quiet zones” – text message to pager or cell phone Voice to text for those who want to leave urgent message Text chat Hospital Intensive Care Unit – Forward to voicemail or alternate phone number Football game – SMS or chat via cell phone Since can’t hear above the crowd to talk on the phone When not in the house, office or car – cell phone Physical location very often determines the type of communication preferred But it is not practical to expect user to update location based presence informationTechnical challenges: Technical challenges Network load minimize the number of events sent over the network Usability abstract to raw data to meaningful event; level of abstraction e.g. exact lat/lon, “left work”, “out of office”, “in your proximity”, “heading home, ETA=15 mins” e.g. “online”, “preparing slides”, “preparing slides for today’s meeting” depends on app. and context/relationship of both parties user preferences smart inference from simple heuristics learn and adapt over time Control / privacy data collection, granularity what provided to whom; feedback patterns revealed, little brothers Federation from multiple sources calendar, sensors, devices – different protocols and providers aggregate / abstract from multiple sources Extensibility across service providers providers may have different protocols or infrastructure ability to lookup users by unique IDs Data abstraction and learning: Data abstraction and learning Raw data Meaningful eventQuiet Zone – Levels of Enforced Compliance: Quiet Zone – Levels of Enforced Compliance Incoming Signal Blocking This level would most likely be used in places where use of a cellular device represents a risk (some hospital wards, airplanes, etc) No calls would be sent to the device at all in order to prevent RF interference Forced Quiet With this option a business would choose to completely enforce the quiet zone, only accepting calls for devices that have a profile in effect that has the ringer turned off. If the user’s quiet zone profile indicates that he wants to ignore the quiet zone, then no calls would be forwarded to him. Instead they would be sent to voice mail or some other similar alternative. Recommended Quiet The user’s quiet zone profile is invoked. A considerate user would define such a profile to prevent his phone from ringing. However, this can be overridden.Summary: Summary Presence is the future There are many challenges Technology Privacy Social It can work for us But we should be careful You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
