Marine Trades in Our Community: Marine Trades in Our Community Port Townsend among the smaller regional yards is seeing a burgeoning luxury yacht business. This sector is very significant because of its backward linkages to marine instrument manufacturers and other specialized gear and service providers, as well as its forward linkages to retail and service businesses that serve recreational boaters.
Additionally, as population and personal income levels rise in the Puget Sound Region and Northeastern Olympic Peninsula the total number of non-resident visitors and boat owners selecting moorage facilities in Jefferson County, especially in Port Townsend, is expected to rise over time. Therefore waterfront related businesses and services that support them in our community is also expected to grow to respond to this increasing regional demand.
Marine Trade Industry in our community directly employs 420 persons with a total payroll of $17.6 million dollars and gross production value of $54.9 million dollars. When combined with its indirect and induced affects, total workforce affected is over 1,000 with a payroll of $41.3 million dollars and $99.5 million dollars of gross production.

Average Wage and Salary : Average Wage and Salary Jefferson County workers average wage and salary during 2000 to 2005 has seen an improvement. On the average wages have increased form $23,255 to $26,910, an increase of $3,655, or 15.7% over the five year period. During the same period Marine Trade jobs on the average increased by $2,431, or 6.1%, the same as in the manufacturing sector.
Wage and salary levels in Jefferson County have been rising at a higher rate than the State average. Jefferson County increase during 2000-2005 has been 15.7%, from $23,255 to $26,910. During the same 2000-2005 period Washington State’s average wage and salary has increased from $41,372 to $46,000 or 11.2%.
However, comparisons with the State show us a different picture.
Jefferson County’s average wage and salary levels when compared to the State shows an economy that has been through a major transition since the 1970’s. A transition from one that had been mostly resource based, forestry and fishing industries and manufacturing, to one of services.
In 1970 Jefferson County’s average wage and salary was 89.4% of the state average. By 2005 this figure has become 58.5%.
