Stacey Lapidus Fashion accessories editor, creative force behind one of our favorite websites (Bag Borrow or Steal), and now, handbag designer. At only 32-years-young, Stacey Lapidus has made a career out of critiquing other designers. Now, the ambitious, New York native is taking the helm of her own line of city-chic bags and jewelry. More Nicole Richie than Nicole Kidman, the unconstructed totes and hobos are the perfect carry-all bags for the new crop of “it” girls. Made of distressed leather, python and silk, Lapidus’ infant line shows promise of future glory. Celebrity followers include supermodel and Project Runway host Heidi Klum. Here, the adventurous designer took time out to chat with me about her new company and fashion philosophy. --Pamela Pekerman, BagTrends.com FounderBagTrends.com Continued: BagTrends.com Continued Stacey on … her namesake line BT: Have you always wanted to be an accessories designer? SL: Not specifically, but I have always wanted to design and I love accessories, so it was a natural progression. BT: You used to be an accessories editor at Vanity Fair. Did that inspire you to make the line? SL: It was the most incredible experience a girl who loves fashion could ever ask for! I was exposed to so many beautiful things and learned so much in the six years I spent there. It was truly an education that helped develop my personal style. I felt I had no other choice, but to express what I learned by designing my own collection of accessories. BT: What else inspired your current collection? SL: Women like me who know how to have fun with fashion and aren't afraid of playing around with color and fabrics. BT: Describe your line in 5 words. SL: Modern take on classic elegance BT: Describe the woman who would wear your bag. SL: The same woman who never wears one designer head to toe. BT: You are currently featured in InStyle. How does it feel to see your creations in fashion magazines? SL: It feels unbelievable! After working behind the scenes for so many years, I know how many talented and amazing designs editors see a day. I'm flattered that my pieces were chosen to be featured. BT: What stores carry your line? SL: Bergdorf Goodman, Kirna Zabete, Henri Bendel, Intermix and my website, www.staceylapidus.com. BT: What is on the horizon for your line? What should we expect for the spring/summer? SL: I'm doing a lot of classic shaped bags, but with fun fabric, patterns and linings. The jewelry is amazing! I worked mostly with silk and crystals to create bangles, necklaces, even headbands. BagTrends.com Continued: BagTrends.com Continued Stacey on ... her other ventures BT: How has your background helped prepare you for your current career? SL: I've worked as a stylist as well as an accessories editor for 6 years. That's where I developed a passion for accessories. After years of seeing just about every accessory made, I developed a distinct sense of personal style which reflects in my work BT: How did you get involved with BagBorrowOrSteal? SL: I co-founded it with my brother and his brother-in-law. They had the idea and called me to see what I thought and if it could work. I thought it was brilliant and knew right away that if designers were into the idea, it would be a hit. I believe it's successful because women love handbags and want the option to change them as often as possible, but don't want to spend the money all their money to do so. BT: Do you still do editorial work? ST: I handle some of the editorial on www.bagborroworsteal.com , but since leaving Vanity Fair, I've been solely concentrating on expanding my business. I would love to be a contributor at some point in the future. Stacey on ... business BT: What is the biggest challenge of starting your own line? SL: Learning how to design and manufacture. I have always known what I like and don't like and was considered to have great taste. But, I never knew much about the design process. Learning how to take my ideas and create something tangible is extremely exciting. BT: How do you deal with the challenges? SL: Each day I learn more and more about all aspects of the business, from production to sales. Since the company is still rather small, I embrace working the long hours and being as involved as I can. As I grow and understand, so will my ideas and capabilities for the collections. BagTrends.com Continued: BagTrends.com Continued Stacey on ... style BT: Describe your personal style? SL: I don't feel that I have a distinct style; I enjoy mixing and matching different styles. When I shop, I always buy colors that compliment each other, so no matter what I throw on, it works. Of course, I usually never leave the house without some type of great accessory. It’s amazing how one pretty necklace or bracelet can transform a simple pair of jeans and tank top. BT: What is the key for a bag to become a classic? SL: A simple, great shape BT: What is the one item no woman can live without? SL: A handbag, of course! BT: What advice would you give readers on style? SL: The best piece of advice is to have your own style. Don't conform and wear something you don't like, just because it's "in" for the season. Style is about individuality and how those pieces represent you as a person. Stacey Lapidus' Tough Girl diaper bag boasts rock-and-roll studs on its luxe red, blue or black leather exterior ($580 at Nordstrom nationwide, Rubensteins in New Orleans, Testimo in St. Louis, Vis A Vis in Nantucket or online at Staceylapidus.com). Mia Bossi's super-chic Maria tote is made from handcrafted Italian leather and comes complete with removable diaper bag lining which easily converts it to a weekender or computer bag (computer case insert optional). True to its name, Maria looks more like an "It" bag than your typical Baby Wipes-and-bottle carrier - as witnessed by her appearance on the arm of Hollywood moms Joely Fisher and Natasha Henstridge, among others ($400 at Bloomingdale's, Fred Segal, Due Maternity and Miabossi.com).CosmopolitanJune 2006: Cosmopolitan June 2006SelfJune 2006: Self June 2006In Touch WeeklyJune 12, 2006: In Touch Weekly June 12, 2006ElleJuly 2006: Elle July 2006ElleJuly 2006: Elle July 2006WWD Accessories SupplementJuly 2006: WWD Accessories Supplement July 2006LuckyAugust 2006: Lucky August 2006LuckySeptember 2006: Lucky September 2006 InStyleOctober 2006: InStyle October 2006InStyleOctober 2006: InStyle October 2006InStyleOctober 2006: InStyle October 2006People Style WatchOctober 2006: People Style Watch October 2006SelfOctober 2006: Self October 2006InTouch WeeklyOctober 2, 2006: InTouch Weekly October 2, 2006
