Yellowstone Yellowstone is a sleeping supervolcano located in the northwest corner of Wyoming, in USA. Supervolcano is a volcano capable of ejecting more than 1000 cubic km pumice and ash in a single eruption. The last major eruption occurred 640,000 years ago, with ashes fallout reaching California, the Gulf states and Iowa. It is 50 times more powerful than the infamous Krakatau explosion of 1883, in Indonesia. This created a caldera of 55 x 72 km (55 miles x 45 miles) large. National Geographic August 2009. Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872. It was the first national park in the world, created to preserved the natural beauty for future generations. It is well known for its wildlife and hydrothermal activities. In the 18C French trappers named the area “Roche Jaune” (Yellow Stone). It is commonly believe that it was named after the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Click to end.
