It covered the bell tower with lace-like stone work. Slide 2: History of 15C Spain Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492 to discover the “New World”. By the 16th Century Spain became the superpower of the time, controlling much of the Americas, the Low Countries, Central Europe and the Philippines. All the riches of the Americas were used to finance Spanish wars in Europe and to build Cathedrals. Seville was the centre of Spanish trades with the Americas. By the 17the Century, Spain managed to bankrupt its treasury. Slide 3: The Cathedral at night Slide 4: The Cathedral was built on the site of the Great Mosque in Seville. The Giralda Tower was changed from a minaret into a bell tower. Construction began in 1402. It took a century to complete. Slide 6: The carving on the Tympanum on the Eastern Façade, showing the Adoration of the three Wise Men. Slide 7: The sclptures Some of the statues on the cathedral.
