Gongbi Style : Gongbi Style Gongbi Style ??? Gongbi is a Chinese painting style. The word ‘gongbi’ implies meticulous and laborious piece of work. It is associated with tidy, fine, precise and delicate lines. There is no loose brush stoke in Gongbi painting. Often individual hair is visible. Today, it often painted in vivid colours. This is not unlike the style of Sandro Botticelli. Gongbi style was confined to the court and only the wealthy could afford Gongbi artists, as the style is very time consuming. Sometimes it even refers as ‘Court Style’. It depicts mainly figures, flora and animals. Tiger is a particular favourite subject of the style. In the 20th Century, we saw a revival of the style as the number of professional painters grew. This trend was given a further boost in the 50s. In 2008, we saw the establishment of the Institute of Gongbi Paintings. Wang Meifang and Zhao Guojing are superb example of Gongbi artists. Painters’ women : What kind of women are in their painting? It is of course very subjective. To me these women look very confident. Even when naked, they looked directly at the viewer without any discomfort. These women will demand rather than wait for their chance to speak. It contrasts well with the dynastic women often shown after Song, tip-toe around, looking down or half hidden faces behind fan. They are very feminine but absolutely confident of their sexuality. Painters’ women End : End All rights reserved, for personal, non-commercial and non-profit use only.
