????? Huhsien Peasant Paintings Huhsien is situated in the outskirt of Xian, in Shensi. It has a population close to half a million. Today it remains to be the only mass artistic movements in China. This movement probably began in the late 1960s. In November 1973, its paintings met its first debut in the National Art Exhibition held in Beijing. Most of the works in this slideshow belong to this period. Many of these works were by amateur peasant artists. By the late 1970s, these paintings were exhibited in London, America and in Europe. It was even reported by the Time magazine in 1978. Like its counter part in the Western peasant paintings, the style is simplistic. Many of the paintings depict scenes of harvest and the rural life. It also acts as a propaganda medium through which government policies were disseminated. The music is chosen from Prelude of Harvest Scenes, a symphonic suite, by Chu Wei, who was born in 1917 and became resident composer with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. Sometimes it is referred to as Village Suite. The Prelude is vigourous, leading to a gentler clarinet solo. It is well suited to company the paintings of Huhsien.
