Slide 2:

Introduction In the early 19C, the northern coast of France, Normandy & Brittany, was mostly populated by fishermen. As the economy of France developed, a new middle class, the bourgeoisie immerged from the newly industrialised economy. Railways were built to link the northern coast with Paris. The availability of leisure and accessibility turned many of these northern towns into holiday restorts. The exhibition explores the painting of the northern French coast in the 1850 and 1890s through the eyes of the painters.

Slide 3:

1860 marine painting was in decline. The first few paintings seems to continue with the Dutch tradition of seascape paintings.

Slide 4:

Before Impressionism

Slide 5:

The rise of Impressionism is associated with outdoor sketching in oils. Early paintings recorded the holidaymaker and beach scenes. Boudin did quite a few of these at Trouville.

Slide 6:

Apart from the French the Americans are well represented. The exhibition include James McNeill Whistler, Mary Cassett (an impressionist) and John Singer Sargent. I did not spot any other nationality other than French and American painters.

Slide 7:

Courbet was one of the first to start painting the effects of weather and light on the coastline. He is more well known for his social realism paintings. It was a bit of surprise to see so many of his seascape paintings in the exhibition.

Slide 14:

A surprise contribution by Jean Francois Millet, who is more well-known for painting peasants.
