OPTICAL ILLUSIONS:

OPTICAL ILLUSIONS Melanie Thompson Jenny Egbert Justin Olson Jennifer Diamanti

Bugs in the Brain (Discovery Magazine):

Bugs in the Brain (Discovery Magazine) Size constancy- when your brain magnifies the size of a distant object to compensate for the small size on your retina. This causes perceptional distortions when the trained brain interprets apparent directional movement and compensates it with size constancy

The Human Eye:

The Human Eye

Battling Eyeballs:

Battling Eyeballs

Necker Cube:

Necker Cube http://dogfeathers.com/java/necker.html The left and right hemispheres of the cerebral cortex battle for control creating a competitive click in the brain.

Are these lines parallel?:

Are these lines parallel? The brain interprets the upward progression of the hash marks as a gradual increase in their distance from the eye. It magnifies the space where the hash marks come together as arrows.

Colors and optical illusion:

Colors and optical illusion The thought behind colors and optical illusion is the perception of movement associated with colors. This is based on the theory that cool colors recede and warm colors appear to come towards the viewer.

Height –Width Illusion:

Height –Width Illusion An upright line segment appears longer nearby and equal horizontal line segment

Illusion of Contrast:

Illusion of Contrast Are the parallel lines straight or curved?

Illusion of Contour:

Illusion of Contour An open or empty figure appears to have greater area or capacity than an equal closed or filled figure

Equivocal Illusion:

Equivocal Illusion The drawing of a three dimensional object appears to have two or more interpretations

Illusion of Depth:

Illusion of Depth Line or figures are distorted as the result of a point, line, or figure appearing to be behind or in front of another. How many prongs are on the fork?

Illusion of Interrupted Extent:

Illusion of Interrupted Extent The distance between the portions of an interrupted line or figure appears to shrink

Non-classified illusions:

Non-classified illusions An optical illusion that does not fall into one or more of the above categories.

Pinwheel:

Optical Illusions Through Art:

Optical Illusions Through Art Look at the young women turning her head away from us, do you see any one else in the picture? Look again?

Optical Illusions Through Art:

Optical Illusions Through Art Science can be combined with the beauty of an artist’s imagination to create an illusion that intrigues and mystifies the viewer, as well as to aesthetically please the eye. Artists such as M.C. Escher have captured this idea.

Gravity Defying Waterfall:

Gravity Defying Waterfall Look closely at the waterfall, what is wrong in this picture?

The Endless Staircase:

The Endless Staircase The optical illusion not only makes for an entertaining picture, it also forces one to think on a deeper level. What is represented in the piece, or is it simply a nice picture? What do you think it represents?
