It is often those who most need their human rights protected, who also need to be informed that the Declaration exists - and that it exists for them. : It is our duty to ensure that these rights are a living reality - that they are known, understood and enjoyed by everyone, everywhere. Slide 3: Since its adoption in 1948, the Declaration has been and continues to be a source of inspiration for national and international efforts to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms. Slide 7: The rights guaranteed are divided into six chapters: Dignity Freedom Equality Solidarity Citizens' rights Justice Slide 8: The Convention established the European Court of Human Rights. Any person who feels his or her rights have been violated under the Convention by a state party can take a case to the Court. The decisions of the Court are not automatically legally binding, but the Court does have the power to award damages. Human rights are more widely accepted than they have ever been. They have become part of the currency of international relations, and most countries participate in the human rights system. Treaty arrangements help encourage and pressure countries to deal with their human rights problems.
