The Crafts Council Spark Plug Curator Awards :

The Crafts Council Spark Plug Curator Awards spark plug –noun 1. a device designed to fit in each cylinder of a gasoline-powered internal-combustion engine and to produce the electric spark for igniting the mixture of gasoline and air. 2. Informal. a person who leads, inspires, or animates a group. [Origin: 1900–05] The Crafts Council Spark Plug Curator Awards are aimed at curators to enable the research and development of a proposed exhibition idea or concept.

Slide8:

The need for The Spark Plug Curator Awards was identified through research undertaken during 2006-2007. This research involved engaging with a large number of professionals working with craft collections and exhibitions across the UK; ACE regional officers and other key professionals. Two clear messages were revealed following this direct consultation: A limited development of major, ambitious exhibitions were being staged, or being proposed. Curators across the profession; both freelance and those working with collections and museum/gallery institutions identified the lack of support, resources and time to develop ambitious exhibition proposals. More recently, the publication in May 2007 of the TEG report on touring exhibitions states a need for high quality exhibitions to support a variety of regional museum and gallery venues.
