Rabies is a dangerous disease caused by a virus. Around the world, rabies kills 50,000 people and millions of animals each year. Any mammal can get rabies.: Any mammal can get rabies. People and animals can only get rabies if they are bitten or scratched by an animal that already has rabies. Their saliva carries the rabies virus, even if the animal is dead.
