This program also provides parents with a road map of what is in store for their child’s future, how our programs function along with our core values and philosophies. Working together, we will ensure a healthy and positive learning environment for all our players, coaches and referees. The Cyclones POP program Slide5: In amateur clubs around the country, parental abuse is increasing at record levels. It stems from a lack of communication and understanding and it ultimately destroys the experience for everyone. Parents are #1! Slide6: Parents are the #1 reason players leave the game. Parents are the #1 reason coaches leave the game. Parents are the #1 reason referees leave the game. Responsible parenting is the key to your child’s success and ultimately the future success of the Cyclones and the sport itself. Our Goal: Our goal is to build the most advanced development program in the country, offering playing opportunities from learn to skate through Junior A, all under one flag and under one roof. Here are some warning signs: During the game, you shout negative, critical remarks about your child, other children, the coaches or the referees You talk to the coach about the way he coaches the game and what positions each of the children are playing You get in game-related arguments with other parents You constantly compare your child’s skills to others You openly criticize your son, the coach or other players on the team Parent Behavior – Bad! Slide13: Are you a psycho sports parent? Warning signs (Continued): You use a stop watch in the stands to monitor ice time You coach your son in the car to and from the game on 'your way' of playing the game instead of the coaches way You are completely devastated by the fact your child has to play on a certain team, on a certain line or in a certain position Parent Behavior – Bad! Slide14: Video Presentation Potato Sack Race – USA Hockey Slide15: As a result of the alarming number of physical assaults against officials, the USA Hockey has developed a Zero Tolerance Policy regarding the verbal abuse of officials and inappropriate spectator behavior. Verbal abuse of an official is the first step leading to physical abuse of an official. Zero Tolerance for Parents Slide16: Parents/Spectators: On-ice officials will stop the game when the parents/spectators displaying inappropriate and disruptive behavior interfere with the other spectators or participants of the game. The on-ice officials will identify violators to the coaches for the purpose of removing parents/spectators from the view and game area. Once removed, play will resume. Lost time will not be replaced and violators may be subject to further disciplinary action by the local governing body. This inappropriate and disruptive behavior shall include: Using obscene or vulgar language in a boisterous manner to anyone at any time. Taunting players, coaches or officials or other spectators by means of baiting, ridiculing, threatening physical violence, or physical abuse. Throwing any object in the spectators viewing area, players’ bench, penalty box, or on the ice surface, that in any manner creates a safety hazard. Any violators will be escorted from the facility and not allowed to return until the next day. Zero Tolerance for Parents Slide17: Hockey is a game of constant challenge and setbacks. It touches every fiber of your emotions and can bring out the best and worst in people. The true champions are the players and teams that can take whatever is thrown at them and play through it. The fact of the matter is, we have no control over the challenges that we will face, the only two things that we can control is our effort and our attitude. The way to become a champion is to work hard and stay positive no matter what life throws at you. Effort and Attitude Slide18: Becoming a Model Sports Parent: Makes only positive, encouraging comments on both teams Reinforces the coaches instructions and doesn’t undermine team morale Understands how the playing field is the classroom and respects it Understands that making mistakes are part of the learning process Is in complete control of their emotions and discusses any concerns in private Focuses on fun and participation rather than winning and losing Gets involved in the sport, becomes a fan and learns the rules Respects the referees and understands they will always make mistakes Parents Behavior – Good! Slide19: Becoming a Model Sports Parent: Refrains from excessive alcohol or tobacco use at events Makes every effort to get his child to practice and games on time Runs or participates in team activities Has an even keel approach - Keeps both set backs and victories in perspective Understands the highly powerful and positive impact hockey will have on their child - teaches life principles of teamwork, decision-making, integrity, accountability and being active. Understands how fortunate their kids are to be involved in this program Parents Behavior – Good! Slide20: I will be a source of encouragement and support for players, coaches, referees and the Cyclones club as a whole. I will not openly criticize or yell at the referees. I will not openly criticize or yell at the coaches. I will not openly criticize or yell at my child or other players. I will never approach a coach, player or referee during or after a game. I will respect the 24 hour rule when approaching the coach with any personal concerns. I will always look to find a solution rather than add to the problem. I will make every effort to make every team function and let the coach know if my child will be missing a practice or game. I will respect the facility, the code of conduct in place and supervise my children. I will focus on my child’s effort and attitude more than any other aspect of the game.
