Special talk on “Loneliness”:

Special talk on 'Loneliness' ABSK Asian Baptist Student Koinonia November 3, 2000

Man’s big problem: Loneliness:

Man’s big problem: Loneliness 'Loneliness is now a national epidemic according to many sociologists and psychologists…' [Jane Brady, NY Times] Loneliness is the #1 problem for young people in this country [Associated Press] in a large crowd as well as in little room young and old alike at the best of times and the worst of times

From a recent national survey::

From a recent national survey: 'so many people admit to lacking relational connections… The common solution is to keep busy and to stimulate ourselves with a variety of new experiences - that way we are not so likely to feel the pain of those fundamental holes in our life. People have discovered that if they fill the gaps with commitments and excitement, then they're less prone to feel the emptiness of loneliness…

(it continues…):

(it continues…) '…Of course, that just prolongs the inner despair that eventually cannot be suppressed any longer...' [George Barna, 8/1/00]

We try to solve this problem by…:

We try to solve this problem by… Attaining success  but this is hard to achieve Finding someone who will love you  but who will love you?? Filling ourselves with entertainment Soap operas; animation; etc. Chat Rooms; A.I.M.; MP3’s

But those things leave you empty:

But those things leave you empty 'When you get to the top, there’s nothing there' [Jack Higgins, renowned author of The Eagle has Landed] Divorce rate climbing (70% in America) For people in 16-24 age bracket, the #3 killer is suicide

Lessons from celebrities:

Lessons from celebrities They are liked just for the roles that they play i.e. the 'mask' that they put on They realize that nobody knows their true selves  so…many turn to alcohol, drugs, or even charity to find some relief

Celebrities’ heart confessions::

Celebrities’ heart confessions: 'If I am such a legend, then why am I so lonely?' [Judy Garland, 'Dorothy' in The Wizard of Oz] 'I feel so alone' [Elvis Presley, written on a crinkled paper from a Las Vegas hotel room]

All of us put on masks:

All of us put on masks 'It’s a terrible thing to be alone…but don’t lower your mask until you have another mask prepared beneath…' [Katherine Mansfield, British author] The Masks we put on: The good son The good listener The cool stud The humorous one  but ‘impression management’ drains us

How did it get this bad?:

How did it get this bad? As a young child, thought everyone loves you Slowly realized that there is limited amount of love  so you must fight for it Kindergarten teacher telling you, 'All of you are special' is just phony!  you need to be special andamp; different

Limitations of human love ::

Limitations of human love : 1) We love conditionally Based on performance andamp; appearance 2) Each person has his/her own needs It’s like two bankrupt companies…

Consequences of being special:

Consequences of being special We are fearful of those who are in the same 'specialty' We quickly size each other up We live fake lives to maintain our 'special-ness'

“Imposter Phenomena”:

'Imposter Phenomena' We know: the truth about ourselves andamp; the image we project don’t match So, we fear--that one day the truth will come out Also, our many masks are contradictory  we want people to know us but… we don’t want people to really know us

Doubly disconnected:

Doubly disconnected We are disconnected with others… AND ourselves  intense longing to trust someone, to feel safe with someone..

What does the Bible say?:

What does the Bible say? Man was created as relational beings First bad thing was being alone 'The LORD God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone…'' [Genesis 2:18] Man was created to love and to be loved And most importantly…

God knows you personally:

God knows you personally Psalm 139 says, 'You have searched me and you know me… You perceive my thoughts from afar… You created my inmost being…' God sees through my mask and knows all about me (even the darkest secrets) And yet, God still loves me! And there’s an unlimited supply of that love!

Relationship with God provides::

Relationship with God provides: The proper connection with others see others as brothers and sisters can be free in front of them Church, the family of God no need to size each other up a safe home with the love of God

“A place to call home” (Words & Music by Greg Ferguson):

'A place to call home' (Words andamp; Music by Greg Ferguson) I see that faraway look in your eyes A hurt and a hunger that I recognize There's a void in your spirit that you can't disguise A need for a place to call home

Slide20:

You're worn out and weary from runnin' around But you're aimless and restless And you can't settle down 'Cause you're looking for something You just haven't found A place for your heart to call home

Slide21:

Longing for home Dreaming of home To drink in the love To feel the embrace Your heart needs a place to call home

Slide22:

In the quiet night when you're finally alone And you open a part of your soul Your homeless heart breathes out a prayer Crying out that there's got to be more!

Slide23:

Your Savior's aware that you're struggling so He's feeling your longing And He wants you to know That there's something eternal Engraved in your soul That draws you and beckons you home

Slide24:

And it carries a promise that time can't erase That one day the answers will fall into place And your Savior will wipe Every tear from your face And hold you and welcome you home

Slide25:

He's calling you home He’s leading you home So drink in the love And feel the embrace At last there's a place to call home There's a place for your heart to call home…

Closing comment:

Closing comment 'What makes loneliness an anguish is not that I have no one to share my burden, but this: I have only my own burden to bear…' [Dag Hammarskjold, former secretary general of UN] As a family of God, we can share one another’s burdens…
