Course Philosophy: 

Course Philosophy Accommodate varied backgrounds of students - Hard science versus non-science - Undergraduate versus graduate This requires flexibility in course requirements - common core material for all students - possible special projects/papers that are related to students’ individual interests - more challenging homework for grads

Approximate Schedule Week 1 – Introduction (Ch 1) and Dynamics of Deserts (Ch 2) Week 2 – Dynamics of Deserts (Ch 2) Week 3 – Dynamics of Deserts (Ch 2), Desert Climates (Ch 3) Week 4 – Desert Climates (Ch 3) Week 5 – Atmospheric and Surface Energy Budgets of Deserts (Ch 4) Week 6 – Surface Physics of Desert Landscapes (Chs 5-7) Week 7 – Numerical Modeling of the Desert Atmosphere (Ch 9), and Desert Boundary Layers (Ch 10) Week 8 – Desert Microclimates (Ch 11), and Interactions Among Desert Microclimates (Ch 12) Week 9 – Desert Rainfall (Ch 13) Week 10 – Changes in Desert Climate (Ch 15) Week 11 – Severe Weather in the Desert (Ch 16) Week 12 – Effects of Deserts on the Global Environment (Ch 17), Week 13 – Desertification (Ch 18) Week 14 – Biometeorology of Deserts (Ch 19) Week 15 – Presentation of special projects/papers Final Exam – comprehensive Throughout the semester, discussions focusing on individual deserts will be interspersed with the scheduled material.

Grading : 

Grading 2 exams plus final (20% each) Quiz about every week (8-10, drop 1, totaling 20%) Homework (review questions, problems and exercises, 20%) – encouraged to work together, typed, put all names on homework

Student Responsibilities: 

Student Responsibilities Check email at least once a day (I’ll send quiz reminders, distribute sample exams, etc.). Attend class. Email or call me if there is a problem. Let me know if any basic-meteorology topics need review. Participate in class discussions

Instructor Responsibilities Announce (in class and/or on web) quiz dates the week before Review basic material, as necessary Post lectures on web before class Announce reading assignments (you will not be responsible for all material in text) Minimize 'lecture' format
