Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Hi, I’m Bryan Sr. Web Based Training Developer at Children’s Hospital Seattle Multimedia developer since 1996 WBT, e-commerce, content management systems, and user interface design

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Hi, I’m Bryan Clients/Projects Include: Children’s Hospital Seattle Real Networks -- CNN, ABCnews, CBS, FoxSports, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, and E! Bermuda Fire & Marine Insurance Perkins Coie law firm Mars Hill Church of Seattle (#23 in 9 yrs)

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Hi, I’m Bryan Joined Children’s Seattle in April 2003 to develop their first enterprise-wide WBT product This PowerPoint presentation can be found at: http://www.technoranti.com/cerner_2005

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Hi, I’m Bryan Case studies of this project published via – American Society for Training and Development (ASTD): TechKnowledge 2005 in Las Vegas http://www.technoranti.com/astd_2005_pdf Sys-Con MX Developer’s Journal Article: “Between a Rock and a Soft(ware) Place” (March 2005) http://www.technoranti.com/mxdj_march_2005

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Question Why would anyone in their ‘right mind’ ever want to build their own custom WBT system? Why would anyone ever leave the comfort of the Shire?

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 1: Custom Pediatric Install Children’s is a highly customized pediatric installation of Cerner As I noted in MXDJ – Buying packaged eLearning software from the system vendor wasn’t a viable option. Pediatric hospitals are very specialized organizations.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 1: Custom Pediatric Install Our medical orders system would be a very customized beast – quite different to the version our vendor implemented at regular hospitals.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 1: Custom Pediatric Install Imagine the differences between a critical medication order for a two-week old baby and a 17-year old teenager and you begin to understand the complexity of a pediatric implementation of this kind of system.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 2: Could Ship on Time Building and shipping a custom system was faster than going through a vendor procurement process. We had no -- Learning Management System (LMS) Content Management System (CMS) Role Based Course Presentation System Content Capturing Tools or Design Process

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 2: Could Ship on Time We were able to build these things quickly in house with a set of rapid development technologies Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) ASP 3.0 (which we affectionately call ASP.old) Microsoft SQL Server Macromedia Flash Platform Macromedia Captivate (familiar??)

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 2: Could Ship on Time Timeline Began on April 28, 2003 Launched on October 6, 2003 5 months and 8 days

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 2: Could Ship on Time Team Myself (about 55 hrs a week for 5 months & 1 week) Technical Project Manager (about 30 hrs a week for 3 months) Code Centric Flash Developer (about 40 hrs a week for 2 months)

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 2: Could Ship on Time 1 Instructional designer with no experience or training (about 24 hrs a week for 5 months & 1 week) 1 Content coordinator with eLearning creation training, but no experience (about 24 hrs a week for 5 months & 1 week)

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations We had _very_ high user interface (UI) design expectations. Sub-optimal design is everywhere Even in my own designs, oh my! Example: Web Pages That Suck http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations Needed “WOW!” Factor “Entertainment” objection to this is a misnomer Was actually a scoped deliverable for our WBT project

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations eLearning Hero - Dr. Michael Allen Allen Interactive http://www.alleni.com Creator of Authorware which formed a core foundation for Macromedia (soon Adobe) Boring eLearning is most expensive http://www.learningcircuits.org/2004/jul2004/allen.htm Gives least amount of ROI

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations Allen says… Michael W. Allen, “Michael Allen’s Guide to eLearning”, Published by John Wiley & Sons, 2003, pg. 5 Boring instruction is not effective instruction. Minds wander, attention wanes, learners muddle through, maybe. When learners are through, they’re through – relieved it is over and ready to escape to something else as quickly as possible.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations Little is retained. Needed behaviors have not been established. Rich associations do not exist for learners to remember key points. It’s a waste. It’s bad.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations Needed to be clean, easy to use Clean, usable, easy to understand design is now a primary technology business driver -- Apple, Google, Microsoft’s Sparkle This will continue to accelerate -- 2006 is anticipated to be one of the biggest years in UI design history Topher’s ‘Orca Ed’ product has great UI

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations Best ‘good’ design resource I’ve found is -- The Non-Designer's Design Book by Robin Williams

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations Best usability resource I’ve found is -- Don’t Make Me Think! Steve Krug

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations Krug’s Mantra -- p 41 It doesn't matter how many times I have to click, as long as each click is a mindless, unambiguous choice.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations On main pages -- p. 101 As quickly and clearly as possible, the Home page needs to answer the four questions I have in my head when I enter a new site for the first time:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations What is this? What do they have here? What can I do here? Why should I be here and not somewhere else?

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: High UI Expectations Blink Malcomb Gladwell (pg 142) Columbia University Professor Sheena Iyengar study on jam choice -- 24 choices = 3% sales 6 choices = 30% sales

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: UI Matters More usable UI design was in reach, so we did it. Here’s mine Keep a lookout for my design weaknesses: A good designer should be able to name the top 3 design weaknesses in their UI

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Answer 3: UI Matters More usable UI design was in reach, so we did it. Short demo movie of our WBT

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Successes, Lessons Learned, Conclusions

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions As an inaugural WBT project for Children’s Hospital Successes Got the WBT ball rolling. Delivered a complex working simulation WBT with a short amount of resources and time. Was used to as part of blended training for 2500 professional end-users.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Project received very well by physicians, nurses, and other staff.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Lessons Learned Required more technical resources to build and maintain than originally forecast. Limited technical infrastructure in place to support the type of WBT that was requested. Would devote more resources to instructional design. Capturing a system that is not finished yet is hard. Very common to these types of healthcare systems.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Unknown issues (e.g. right-click) are very resource intensive. Begin with a smaller project accompanied by more rapidly deployable and easily maintainable documentation (e.g. help system and VCR style non-simulation demos). Delivering full screen (kiosk mode) training via Internet Explorer proved to be problematic (Microsoft’s Windows XP Service Pack 2 removed chrome-less kiosk windows without significant notification to developer community. This effectively broke our existing WBT which required significant reworking.) Consider long term maintenance plan.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Captivate (RoboDemo) Successes Allowed rapid prototyping of training. Proved to be easy for non-technical SMEs to use. Easy to learn (even for mega-novices).

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Easy to edit, Change wording. Cut/paste whole frames (Wow, easy!) Drag and drop to change slide order Easy participation by multiple content reviewers. FLA output allowed completely flexible system design. Simple asset management in a single file.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Stage was set for future extensibility (e.g. dropping in Captivate objects into an AICC/SCORM compliant LMS).

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Lessons Learned Customization was difficult for non-developer (i.e. difficult to get different caption bubbles). No robust text formatting functionality (e.g. bullet and numbered lists).

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions RoboDemo 4.5 (released 6/2003) was unstable in many scenarios. Problematic to non-technical users (beyond learning standard multimedia system configuration). Fixed in RoboDemo 5 and Captivate 1.0.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions RoboDemo 4.5 had an anti-piracy system that broke installation inexplicably during normal installation patterns in ways that could not be corrected. Fixed in current version of Captivate.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Word exported .doc slides were too small to read onscreen. This was manually corrected via Word macros and his fully fixed in Captivate 1.0. Right click simulation in Flash was very problematic because right clicks cannot be easily simulated in Flash.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions Conclusions Despite troubling limitations, RoboDemo 4.5 was worth using for our project because of the leverage it provided. We are now employing Captivate 1.0 for new projects.

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions:

Web-Based Training: Effective & Affordable Solutions We developed valuable in-house knowledge necessary to build an eLearning system that will eventually include: Highly interactive simulation WBT. Classroom training. Comprehensive user friendly help system and job aids. Quick to produce tutorials (results not tracked, exported straight from Captivate to a web server).
