What is functional fitness?:

What is functional fitness? Functional fitness is the type of training that should be done not just to gain looks, but to make your body move better. It is a training for life. This exercises increase your mobility, body strength and fitness, while take out the pain and any risk of injury. Clifton O. Boyd Jr says that most times we focus on losing weight and toning up before some big event, however the practice of any exercise should be shift from training for events to training for performance and function, making daily activities easier.

Improve your mobility:

Improve your mobility According to Clifton O. Boyd Jr the fundamental of functional excellence is always mobility. To use load in exercises made for a certain part of the body that “can’t move” can lead to some sort of injury over time, unless that the load is there to help create the mobility that you don’t have. There are four major joints in the body that needs mobility exercises, the ankles, hips, thoracic spine and shoulders.

Do specific activation drills before you train:

Do specific activation drills before you train The days when warming up was done by running on the treadmill or running on the spot are gone. Know how to actually activate your body, you need some serious and specific activation work. The exercises will decrease your risk of injury and help you have a better session. Do exercises like lateral band walks, where you use a micro band and start doing some lateral banded walks, it will stabilize the pelvis improving stability and strength or body-weight bridges that will wake up your glute max and hamstrings. Or even warding patterns where you will push against another person or a wall that will help you to activate your whole body.

Have you heard of the hip hinge?:

Have you heard of the hip hinge? Clifton O. Boyd Jr was shocked to know that many people never heard of the “hip hinge’. This movement is important and will start getting your glutes and hamstrings (posterior chain) ready. The movement is easy, you need to move your hips from flexion to extension with the glutes and without over flexing the knees or ankles. You do a variation of a squat when the 3 joints flex as it is great for your posture, strength, stability, fat loss, lean muscle and decrease of injury.

Did you know there are 3 planes of motion? :

Did you know there are 3 planes of motion? And you should move in all of the 3 planes of motion. Clifton O. Boyd Jr says that the functional movement needs the 3 planes: Sagittal (forward, back, up, down); Frontal plane (side to side); Transverse plane (rotational). The first is the common one and your exercises must be mainly on it. But if you want a body that can naturally move, the use of all 3 planes is essential.

Functional fitness is more than the tools:

Functional fitness is more than the tools Contrary to many believes functional fitness is not the use of tools to exercise. Clifton O. Boyd Jr says that the training is done by the way you use that tool, it is that what determines the functionality of the session. So it is all about the technique.

It is not because you sweat that the exercise is right :

It is not because you sweat that the exercise is right The training are not meant to make you sweat, but to alter your heart rate. Every time your heart rate increases with an exercise, you need to control it and turn it down again, this ability is vital for the brain and body to recover and make sure you can keep your technique strong. It is also an important factor in weight loss and lean muscles says Clifton O. Boyd Jr.

It is all about less injuries :

I t is all about less injuries Functional fitness training will prepare you for unexpected experiences and at the same time will lower the risk of injury during any activity. Some exercises actually isolate large muscle groups like chest, arms, and legs, which leaves yourself propene to have injuries while doing simple everyday tasks. So the idea is to start creating a body that uses all muscles in the way they are designed to be used says Clifton O. Boyd Jr.
