Guerrilla warfare- Non-traditional styles of war involving small groups to attack behind U.S. lines
William Howard Taft- Future President of the U.S., became Governor of the Philippines.
Sphere of influence- A region dominated of controlled by an outside region

Boxer Rebellion- Rebellion by members of a secret Chinese group. Efforts were stopped by European forces.
Open Door Policy- Free Trade with China
Russo-Japanese War- War between Russia and Japan
Great White Fleet- American navy sailed around the world to demonstrate dominance.

Filipinos are out numbered by American troops so they use hit and run tactics.
Spring 1901- U.S. troops capture Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Filipine resistance.
Insurrection stops after his capture

Taft becomes Governor in 1901.
He had large ambitions for the reconstruction and recovery of the Islands.
He built roads, schools, and bridges
Taft Censored the press and maintained order
1916- Congress passes the Jones Act- Declares that the Philippines will ultimately gain their independence.
30 years later, the U.S. liberated the Philippines from Japanese occupation. They were finally free!

Britain, France, Germany, and Russia had divided China into zones or spheres of influence.
These Nations had trading rights and access to different ports in China

John Hay issued notes explaining that the U.S. expected “perfect equality of treatment for commerce” in China.
This led to the Open Door Policy which made China open to trade from all nations.

Righteous and Harmonious Fists AKA Boxers- One of many secret societies formed by the Chinese.
This society was made up of Chinese trained in martial arts.
These members criticized western ways and ideas.
May 1900- The Boxers revolted in what became known as the Boxer Rebellion.
Boxers killer missionaries and foreign diplomats.
European, Japanese, and American forces stop the rebellion and demand money to repair damages.
This angered the Nationalists
1911- Nationalists revolt and overthrow the Emperor

John Hay reassures the world that they did not want colonies in China, just free trading.
To show goodwill, the U.S. used some of the money from the Boxer Rebellion to fund Chinese Students studying in America
Tensions Rise Between America and Japan : Tensions Rise Between America and Japan Japan attacks Russians in Port Arthur, China. This is followed by a massive land attack killing more than 100,000 Russian men.
Roosevelt Settles the Russo-Japanese War
Representatives meet in New Hampshire to negotiate.
Roosevelt convinces the two sides to sign a peace treaty.
This ends the war & President Roosevelt is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

Tension grows between the U.S. and Japan because of the San Francisco School Board ban on Japanese, Chinese and Korean students attending “white schools”.
Japanese Newspapers encouraged Japan to retaliate and defend their “countrymen”.
Roosevelt sympathized with Japan and established the Gentleman’s Agreement.
The pact stated that the school board would end segregation in America in Japan would limit emigration of its citizens to the U.S.

While easing tensions with Japan, Roosevelt also prepared the military to protect the U.S. interests in Asia
Roosevelt got congressional support for a new fleet of Navy ships.
1907- Roosevelt sends an armada of 16 white battleships on a “good will cruise” around the world.
This demonstrated America’s increasing military power in the world!
