Brought together three key audiences with a stake in communication for development that seldom get together: academia, policy-makers and communication practitioners. The Congress - HighlightsThe Goal : The Goal To mainstream Communication for Development in development policies and practices. By sharing experiences and best practices from around the world that demonstrate that Communication for Development is an essential tool for meeting today’s most pressing development challenges. The Process – The road to the Congress: The Process – The road to the Congress The preparations to WCCD has been part of a much wider process to advance and mainstream the discipline of Communication for Development that involved: Organizing Bodies Associated EventsThe Process – The road to the Congress Organizing Bodies: The Process – The road to the Congress Organizing Bodies Secretariat: World Bank, FAO, The Communication Initiative Network Steering Committee: 17 organizations - inter-governmental (1), civil society-based (7), academia (1), the UN system (3), media (1) and the donor community (3). Scientific Committee: 23 leading professors and practitioners of Communication for Development from 18 academic and research institutions. Advisory Body: 41 organizations - civil society-based (14), academia and think-tanks (9), media (2), the UN system (7), donors (3), multilateral institutions (3) and development agencies (3).The WCCD Program - Thematic Sessions: The WCCD Program - Thematic Sessions Themes: Governance, Health, Sustainable Development, Communication Labs. Streams: the overarching communication streams addressed by the sessions included: demonstrating the value-added of Communication for Development providing data and evidence of the impact of Communication for Development highlighting the most promising theoretical foundations and methodological approaches underpinning Communication for Development todayThe WCCD ProgramPolicy Makers Forum: The WCCD Program Policy Makers Forum A select group of Policymakers reflected upon a set of recommendations for mainstreaming communication, based on a platform prepared and discussed before and during the CongressThe Outcome: The Outcome The WCCD is a major step in a broader process of mainstreaming communication for development. Its outcomes and key contribution to that process are: The Rome Consensus: key recommendations agreed among Congress participants. Significant amount of evidence for further advocacy efforts Base for future institutional alliances and a wide platform for mainstreaming communication in development policy and practice World Wide Exposure and Media CoverageSome Statistics from the Congress Website: Some Statistics from the Congress Website During the month of October 2006 14,209 total visits from 172 countries, of which 7,017 during the days of the Congress 79,456 total page views, of which 32,555 during the days of the Congress 52.7% of visitors return to the website more than once a day Since the website launch in the Summer of 2005 59,401 total visits from 194 countries 415,479 total page views 52,2% of visitors return to the website more than once a day Webstream 1,430 viewers Virtual Press Room 1,668 visitors E-fora 1274 participants Beyond the WCCD: Beyond the WCCD Rome Consensus finalized and translated in three languages Mainstreaming Study on C4D revised and finalized Proceedings being finalized (including all papers in a cd) A number of publications derived from the Congress are forthcomingBeyond the WCCD (cont.): Beyond the WCCD (cont.)
