San Francisco Recreation and Park Department Participating Organizations Part II San Francisco Recreation and Park Field Use Study Report March 5, 2007

Slide2:

Spring Ball Field Analysis A number of assumptions were made about the use of fields before or after 5:30 for practices and games Slight surplus on weekends All multiuse baseball fields were allocated to big field comparison and can improve these circumstances

Slide3:

Spring Ground Sports Analysis Assumes one hour time slots

Slide4:

Spring Ground Sports Analysis

Ground Sports Supply - Small:

Ground Sports Supply - Small Spring Ground Sports Analysis

Slide6:

Spring Ground Sports Analysis This contrasts with full pitches where practices are 11/2 to 2 hours

Slide7:

Fall Demand Reporting for Fall is 75-80% of actual

Slide8:

Fall Ground Sports

Slide9:

Allocations between ground and ball sports: In the spring all ball fields were allocated exclusive to ball field use In the fall ball fields were allocated to ground sports Weekdays all ball fields used by Public Middle School baseball and softball teams were allocated to ball fields, the rest to ground sports Weekends, all ball fields that were used by ground sports leagues were allocated to ground sports and the rest to ball fields. (the exception is Silver Terrace, which was used by neither and allocated to ground sports) Considerations for the use of Grassy Areas on Ball Fields Don’t feel we received the full contingent of users in the Fall

Fall Ground Sports Analysis Demand

Overview of Results:

Overview of Results

Implications of Result:

Implications of Result Severe Shortage of Fields in Hours After School Not yet adjusted for alternative private fields available to schools but there are only a few Shortage in Small Ball Fields and Small Ground Sports Only partially adjusted for undesirable fields Shortage not fully reflected in numbers due to high demand for desirable fields

Implications of Result:

Implications of Result Need to Address Shortage With A Number of Different Approaches Increase Supply of Fields More Efficient Use of Fields Improve Allocation of Fields

Increase in Supply of Fields:

Increase in Supply of Fields To Address Shortfall With New Fields Full Size Baseball – 212 hours 2 hrs per day, 5 days per week Would require 21 new fields (only needed 2-3 months per year) Full Size Soccer – 306 hours in Spring Each is ½ pitch 2 hrs per day, 2 ½ pitches, 5 days Would require 15 new fields (could be used all year) Not realistic to do it with new fields only but it does help Crocker would add 100 slots in Fall per week Field closes starting Sept 20 plus 2 new fields In Spring would add 52 slots (2 fields plus Monday)

More Efficient Use of Fields:

More Efficient Use of Fields Lighted Fields Expanded daylight savings – allows for back to back practices Sharing of practice fields by teams Ensuring fields remain open Move some ground sports to winter Focus Groups to discuss ideas and alternatives

Improve Allocation of Fields:

Improve Allocation of Fields Set equal numbers of practices and games for all schools in same category Need for fields for recreation and park programs Increased allocation for girls Assure fields available for all age groups of kids Class System – accurate reporting Reduce 20% holdback (currently abused) Focus Groups Discussion

Next Step :

Next Step Conduct Focus Group with users to determine thoughts and additional recommendations Thursday, March 15, 6-8 Two separate groups. Create field use policies for Commission review in April
