Drilling fluids are essentials drilling muds Used in oil well Drilling activities. And clear brine
fluids are the salt mixtures that are used as completion workover and packer fluids in the
drilling operations. The use of clear brine fluids is many fold thus they are used extensively in
various oil and gas exploration activities.
Uses of Clear Brine Fluids:
Solids-free clear brines have become well-established as completion and workover fluids
because of their ability to maximize formation productivity. Clear brine fluids are used as
completion and workover fluids that are pure solutions consisting of salt dissolved in water.
These clears brines in order to function properly must be kept stable at the surface and
downhole conditions. Brine fluids are used in preparation of oil well equipment including
screens liners packers etc. Selection a clear brine fluids for oil well drilling and completion
operations is a very complex process. Fluids tend to react chemically with the produced gases
and oil additives this causing damage to the formation in the form of corrosion or stress
cracks. Besides these technical issues the world economy has also been a contributing factor
in the selection of clear brine fluids for onshore and offshore oil drilling activities.
Clear brine fluids are versatile in nature. The use of clear brine fluids include as a displacement
fluid to discard the drilling wastage. They are also used as permanent packer fluids or drilling
fluids. Proper selection of a combination of inorganic salts like calcium bromide sodium
bromide zinc bromide calcium chloride etc formulates a better balance in the nearby
wellbore pressures found in the oil well field. Brines also facilitate faster penetration rates
improved well bore stability better hole gauge shale sections etc. Thus understanding of the
chemical nature of the brines is essential in selecting cost effective oil well fluids.
Drilling fluids:
This fluid is very important fluid in oil and natural gas drilling process. This fluid is essential in
drilling a wellbore because:
It acts like a coolant and a lubricant.
It prevents the wellbore hole to shut.
Maintains the formation pressure and prevents various formation fluids like oil gas and
water to enter the wellbore before time.
It effectively removes the rocky surface by pushing the bits of rocks back to the surface.

Types of Drilling Fluids:
Drilling muds another name for the fluids used in drilling activities have several types based
upon the drilling conditions. These types include:
1. Water-based
Fresh water based
Salt water based
2. Oil-based
3. Synthetic materials
With the advancement of technology the oil industry have successfully developed many
oil-like synthetic materials which provide high performance drilling like fluids. The
common types of these materials include:
Poly alpha olefins
Internal olefins
Synthetic paraffins
Ethers
Vegetable Esters
Linear alkylbenzenes
4. Air and foam fluids those are less dense in nature.
Drilling Muds have several essential additives. These additives are usually liquid or solid and do
not mix well with air and foam like of drilling liquids. These additives include corrosion
inhibitors like iron oxide and zinc carbonate surfactants like soaps foams and fatty acids
biocides like amines weighing materials like barite and fluid loss reducers like starch and
polymer.
