Every year our chapter gathers ideas from its members on how we can improve the opportunities available to our membership and grow. It is our extremely motivated and enthusiastic students as well as our dedicated Faculty Advisor that make these improvements a reality. We have grown from 22 members 5 years ago to 165 This year! In September of this year the college had a Student Activities fair where all of the clubs and organizations on campus set up booths so that new students could see what clubs they wanted to participate in. The SCNAVTA was voted by the campus as the best, largest and most active club on campus for 2003. First year student during Equine Skills LabOrganizing Experiences: Organizing Experiences At Mount Ida College our group strives to be a teaching and learning organization, providing benefits and experience to our members that they would not receive anywhere else. Our members organize volunteer efforts during the year at area shelters, as well as the New England Wildlife Center and Nevins Farm Equine Rescue. In addition the members organize seminars that benefit all Veterinary Technology students. Last year the chapter hosted a roundtable discussion involving Veterinary Technicians working in the field. These Technicians came from various veterinary backgrounds including large animal, small animal, emergency/critical care, research and exotics. At the discussion students had the opportunity to ask questions regarding what the technicians did on a daily basis in their particular career specialty. Student Chapter of NAVTAPinning Ceremony: Pinning Ceremony In another seminar the chapter had an emergency and critical care Veterinary Technician come and talk about emergency medicine. One of the other events sponsored by the SCNAVTA is the Annual Awards Banquet and Pinning Ceremony for all of the graduating Veterinary Technology students. This event has grown from a small gathering of less than 50 people to a full- cale buffet dinner and had over 250 people attend this year. The girls!Fundraising: Fundraising Fundraisers are also an important part of the Student Chapter. The Chapter holds two major fundraisers each year. In the winter the chapter has an annual Holiday Raffle that raises money for a Scholarship that is given to the most dedicated and active Student Chapter member. In the spring we hold our Annual Rabies Clinic. The rabies clinic is open to the public and offers low cost rabies vaccines and heartworm tests to the public. Not only does this event benefit the public, but also gives our students a chance to perfect their technical skills. This year we had embarked on a large fundraising campaign to facilitate sending 24 students and 2 faculty members to the North American Veterinary Conference in Orlando, FL. These fundraisers have consisted of a bake sale, a Halloween bash for children and a dog wash. SaoriNVTW: NVTW The fall brings National Veterinary Technician Week in October and our Student chapter is well known in the Boston area at this time.
