By Chantelle Bandoo Q4) How did you use mediA TECHNOLOGIES THROUGHOUT THE CONSTRUCTION, RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?

Slide2:

Throughout the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages I have used a range of media technologies consistently throughout my advanced portfolio. One of the main digital technologies that was used throughout all four of these stages of our coursework was the use of the Fronter website. The use of Fronter.com enabled both me and members within my group to upload, organise and present all of our coursework. Using Fronter was advantageous to us as it meant that we could easily locate specific pieces of work as it allowed us to create internal links and folders within. Not only this, Fronter aided me to creatively present my coursework as we were able to embed Youtube clips for example within the similar text analyses section, where I embedded the trailers I analysed, alongside vokis , presentations and Prezis , which presented my responses in a more aesthetically pleasing way. Fronter was a useful technology throughout our advanced portfolio as it is something which is easily accessible for both the teachers and students.

Slide3:

Initially, we began by researching into and analysing existing real media texts through similar text analyses. The internet was an important requirement at this stage of research as it meant that we could use YouTube to view a range of trailers, both in general and genre specific and embed them onto our coursework pages on the Fronter website, before forming an in depth analysis for each one. Within this section I specifically analysed general trailers where I looked at trailers such as the trailer for “Mean Girls”, which was a light and upbeat film, falling under the teen comedy sub-genre. This was then followed by further analyses of trailers which were more genre specific, where I then came across the trailer for the teen thriller film, “PROM NIGHT”.

Slide4:

Throughout the majority of the research and planning section I have used a range of media technologies to present my work in a more visually exciting manner. For example, when discussing the codes and conventions found within all trailers, I decided to present my findings in the form of a Prezi presentation. This media technology was a useful form of technology as it enabled me to produce my work in a more exciting way. Using this media platform I was also able to add text, upload images, sound and embed Youtube videos, which therefore aided me to be more creative whilst presenting my work.

Slide5:

Another example of where I have used Prezi , which came in handy was within my similar text analyses section where I created a Youtube video to analyse the film poster for the film, “Sorority Row”. As I was unable to upload the video directly onto Fronter , Prezi enabled me to simply embed the video onto this platform instead, which successfully meant that I my work could be presented in a slightly different form.

Slide6:

I also incorporated many Vokis within the research and planning sections. Using this media technology required me to create digital characters that could speak out my response, therefore allowing those who view my coursework to be able to interact and engage rather than reading through text continuously. In addition, I used Adobe Photoshop to create GIFs which are a transition of still images. I decided to include this within pages of my coursework in order for my work to be visually exciting and appealing to view.

Slide7:

Throughout the construction stage of our coursework, one of the major media technologies that were used throughout was the Final Cut Pro X software. This form of technology was most important when it came to finalising our teen thriller trailer as it allowed us to edit footage and incorporate specific elements that you would expect to see within a professional trailer. For example, we were able to include conventions such as the film title, credits and institutional logos, which as a result enabled us to produce a professional media product overall. Using the Nikon D3000 we were able to record a range of footage that we wished to include within our trailer. Whilst filming the footage, we placed the camera on the tripod. This gave us the ability to pan or tilt the camera when necessary a lot smoother than if we were to do this freehand. This further aided us to create professional shots for our trailer, enabling it to be successful on the whole.

Slide8:

Using Final Cut Pro was extremely advantageous to us as a group as it allowed us to use a range of tools, by which the software provided us with the ability to include special effects, transitions, text, and sound within our trailer. Whilst editing our footage within Final Cut Pro, the blade tool was frequently used throughout, especially after the turning point as it allowed us to make fast paced jump cuts between scenes, which enabled the pace of the trailer to increase. This was something we decided to incorporate due to the fact that the quick transitions of jump cuts disorientate the target audience and thereby add to the thriller element of our trailer.

Slide9:

In addition, with the provision of the internet, we were able to form the title, “INFATUATION”, where we used a website called Dafont.com which provided us with a range of fonts we could incorporate within our film title . Once we collectively decided on a font, we were able to install it within the Final Cut Pro software ready to use. Although the overall font for our film title was a white simple typography, we incorporated a slight glow around the text, thus helping it stand out more and have more of an edge. In addition, we also included a dark red background to the title which worked greatly as we would stereotypically associate this colour within the thriller genre, where the red helps to connote the violence our main protagonist experiences within her relationship as we often think of blood and gore with this colour. This also signifies how the protagonist is in danger due to her feeling unsafe whilst she remains in the abusive relationship with our antagonist.

Slide10:

In order for us to actually edit content for our film poster and magazine, we initially used the Nikon D3000 once again to record still images of our protagonist and antagonist to feature within our media texts. When it came to producing our ancillary task for both the film poster and magazine, Adobe Photoshop CS6 was the most essential form of technology used. The use of Photoshop enabled us to creatively produce these two media products which accompany our film trailer within our promotional package. Having collected enough research from existing media texts prior to producing the ancillary task, we were able to incorporate the conventions onto our images in order for audiences to identify that it is a film poster and film magazine being shown. By using a pre-installed font from Dafont.com , we were able to create a billing block for our film poster and place it exactly where we wanted to. Other significances the use of the Photoshop editing software gave us was the ability to adjust the brightness and contrast of the images. With the construction of the film magazine, I was able to include a barcode to the page as this is essentially a convention that is found on many film magazine front covers. Once again, the Photoshop software was an editing software which aided us to produce more professional looking media texts.
