Definitions:

Definitions Product - A first level or higher assembly that is sold in a complete end-usable configuration. Product Package - The first tie, wrap or container to a single item or quantity thereof that constitutes a complete identifiable pack. A product package may be an item packaged singularly, multiple quantities of the same item packaged together or a group of parts packaged together. For the purposes of this document the term “product package” includes component packages and packaging intended for storage and transport. Component - Parts (e.g., for electronic products, bare printed circuit boards, integrated circuits, capacitors, diodes, electronic modules, switches, heat sinks, resistors, electronic/electrical connector, etc.) of a first level assembly.

EIA 802 - Product Marking:

EIA 802 - Product Marking §5.3.2 Two-Dimensional Symbol Requirements The two-dimensional symbols referenced in this document are Data Matrix ECC 200 and MicroPDF417. The encoding of data in Data Matrix ECC 200 shall be in accordance with AIM International Technical Specification - International Symbology Specification - Data Matrix using ECC 200. The encoding of data in MicroPDF417 shall be in accordance with AIM International Technical Specification – International Symbology Specification – MicroPDF417. The encoding of data shall follow the ANSI MH10.8.3M/ISO 15434 message format and syntax rules.

EIA 706 - Component Marking:

EIA 706 - Component Marking §6. Symbology Requirements The symbology specified by this standard is Data Matrix ECC200, as defined in ISO/IEC 16022. 6.1 Level of Error Correction The error correction level shall be ECC200. 6.2 Physical Characteristics of the Symbol This section defines the marking requirements for the symbol. 6.2.1 Symbol Size The maximum symbol size shall be 7 mm by 7 mm.

Recommendations 1:

Recommendations 1 For now, focus on labeling and the use of data plates for product marking Imager read products should have a minimum element dimension of 0.015” (0.38 mm) Laser read products should have a minimum element dimension of 0.010” (0.25 mm)

Recommendations 2:

Recommendations 2 When ISO 15415 is published is plenty soon enough to begin the direct marking of parts Make print quality part of product quality; require the same quality for the mark as you do the product Contribute symbols (good ones and ones that failed to read) to the AIM TSC 2D print quality effort

Recommendations 3:

Recommendations 3 Read all available literature, e.g, IAQG, EIA 706, and NASA documents before jumping into the fray
