Content Standards Common Core State Standard, 7 th Grade, Writing Standard 2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content Standard 6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and link to and cite sources as well as to interact and collaborate with others, including linking to and citing sources Physical Education Model Content Standards, 7 th Grade Standard 3: Students assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance Standard 3.5: Assess periodically the attainment of, or progress toward, personal physical fitness goals and make necessary adjustments to a personal physical fitness program Big Ideas/Unit Goals The purpose of this unit plan is to allow students to gain a basic understanding of how to incorporate technology into education, through different fitness tracking apps, to record, assess, and report data tracking (nutrition intake and fitness levels). Students will play games and learn new exercise that will aim to increase muscular and cardiovascular endurance. Increase writing ability by teaching disciplinary literacy, students will need to use skills from across all disciplines to track, chart, and report and interpret reordered information. Students should gain understanding of recommended daily nutrition intake values and recommended mile times, heart-rate, body weight, push-ups and sit-ups. 21 st Century Skills Increase Health Literacy through the use of technology and incorporation of disciplinary literacy

Student Learning Objectives and what Assessments :

Student Learning Objectives and what Assessments Student Learning Objectives The purpose of this unit plan is to allow students to gain a basic understanding of how to incorporate technology into education, through different fitness tracking apps, to record, assess, and report data tracking (nutrition intake and fitness levels). Assessments Through data collection, data interpretation, and visual reporting: students will set physical goals for themselves over the course of the school year. To track the progress of these goals we as a class will conduct weekly timed mile runs and physical fitness exams where student’s will monitor their mile times, resting heart rates, body weight, completed sit-ups and push-ups within one minute, and their feelings at the end of each fitness exam. Students will record this data within the app, input data on to a line graph, and conduct further research in order to interpret how their data fluctuated over the course of the year.

2 Different Teaching/Learning Activities :

2 Different Teaching/Learning Activities Teaching or Learning Activities Downloading, becoming familiar with exercise recording and nutrition intake apps, adding friends (classmates/teacher) Students will learn new games and exercises that will specifically target increasing their cardiovascular and muscular endurance. New exercises will be taught in person and through iPad lessons. New games will involve short sprints, fast paced/high intensity intervals, and gradual increase in repetition. Example: Sharks and Minnows- The entire class begins on one side of the gym, one student – the shark – stands in the center of the gym, on the whistle all students attempt to run to the other side of the gym without getting tagged by the shark. If any student is tagged before crossing the line on the opposite side of the gym, those students must freeze wherever they were tagged and become “seaweed,” they may not move from their spot, but may tag any students who are close enough to them for the duration of the game.

Share why you chose this topic - Why is it appealing to you? Why do you think it is a good topic on which to create a technology-rich unit plan? I believe it is important to teach students that they can become better runners by participating in games and activities that do not only include running. Cardiovascular activity is a great way for anyone to burn calories, get active, and get their bodies moving. Running has, for a long time, been used as a disciplinary strategy which detours many young people from wanting to partake in it. If I can help students enjoy running and help get their heart rates up through fun games and exercises that include this skill, I might motivate them to continue this exercise later in their life. I think tracking fitness levels through the use of technology is a great way to keep students engaged and motivated. Sharing exercise data with friends can create healthy competition. Many adolescents are already active on social media, if I can incorporate something that will benefit their overall health and wellness through social media, I think it will be well received by many students.
