Router & Modem Power Cycling A Simple Tip to Restore Internet Connectivity

Your Equipment A Wireless Router A Modem

Verify the Problem: 

Verify the Problem Is it your PC only, or is it all PCs? Check your PC with 2 websites Check another PC for connectivity -or- Ask a co-worker if they can get to the internet

What you want to see: 

What you want to see Various lights on the front of the Router A SOLID Link or DSL light on the Modem

1- Power Cycle the Router: 

1- Power Cycle the Router Remove the power cord directly from the back of the Router Leave it removed for 30 seconds Be patient- allow a minute for the router to resume it’s work DO NOT press the reset button. The router will lose all settings.

2- Power Cycle the Modem: 

2- Power Cycle the Modem Remove the power cord from the back of the Modem Leave it unplugged for 30 seconds Be patient– wait for the LINK or DSL light to become solid [Typically within 60 to 90 seconds] DO NOT press the reset button. This model has the button behind the yellow sticker

3- After Power Cycling: 

3- After Power Cycling Check for a solid Link or DSL light on the Modem If the Link or DSL light remains flashing, there is a problem with the signal; call the IT Dept. Check your PC again for connectivity

Tips: 

Tips Roughly ½ of connectivity problems are solved by power cycling the Router or Modem Don’t stack or cover the Router & Modem– They will get hot Check with others before power cycling – they may lose work If you don’t have internet, try this before calling This shouldn’t be a regular thing– never on a weekly or daily basis
