SSPSF Mission: 

SSPSF Mission Assemble and test a Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG) RTG is designated for Pluto New Horizons mission in January, 2006 Milestone – RTG shipment to Kennedy Space Center September 30, 2005 Polestar provided support for the duration of the project.

RTG Specs: 

RTG Specs RTG is the only source of power for the spacecraft Uses decay heat from 238Pu Heat is converted to electricity via thermoelectrics Produces 4,500 watts thermal, about 300 watts of power.

Future INL/SSPSF Missions Future Pluto mission Multi-mission RTG’s RTG’s for National Security missions Consolidation of 238Pu production at INL (237Np would be irradiated in the INL Advanced Test Reactor to produce 238Pu) Consolidation eliminates the need to buy Russian Pu.
