Writing with the 2002 Summer Portfolio Institute:

Writing with the 2002 Summer Portfolio Institute

Introduction:

Introduction My name is Brandy Bidwell Corbin. I am an English teacher at Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville, Kentucky. I also teach, as a part time lecturer, at the University of Louisville. My specialty is writing and writing integration.

Topics of Discussion:

Topics of Discussion Main Ideas: Integrating writing in mathematics and technology settings Holistic teaching Portfolio writing

Integrating Writing with Mathematics and Technology:

Integrating Writing with Mathematics and Technology The thought of integrating writing and mathematics can be scary…but it really isn’t all that difficult. Numbers, equations and proofs are all forms of writing…they just need more explanation. Mathematics is definitely a class where writing can be integrated…and should be integrated. Remember the multiple learning styles of students…some need a linguistic approach to mathematics in order to grasp the content and understand the operations involved in mathematics.

Holistic Teaching:

Holistic Teaching Most people have better learning results when they are presented with a holistic teaching style Making all things connect creates meaning for students…if it goes together it makes sense! What can you do to approach teaching in this way? Theme classes Think about how you would understand the content Make learning fun Create units of study that encompass all content areas Work with other teachers

Portfolio Writing :

Portfolio Writing Integrating the KERA Writing Portfolio into your lesson plans The different portfolio writing forms Personal Writing Literary Writing Transactive Writing Reflective Writing Content areas can move outside the limited box of transactive writing…literary, personal and reflective writing are all within the grasp of mathematics.

Let the kids control the publishing, the writing and the editing of the document. Create leadership opportunities for them in the process (editor, writer, illustrator, etc.)

Webbe Books:
