This layer is considered the Penthouse layer, which is 120-150 ft. tall. Many animals spend their lives in the trees and never descent to the ground.The Emergent Layer of the Rain Forest: The Emergent Layer of the Rain Forest Some of the animals in the Emergent Layer or Top Layer are the morpho butterfly, the hawk, proboscis monkey, and the harpy eagle. Morpho Butterfly: Morpho Butterfly Facts about the butterfly: Lives in North, Central and South America Migrates south to California, Florida, and Mexico The wingspan is 10 cm and lays eggs on milkweed leaves Hawk: Hawk They are predators that differ in color and size. They feed on living, cold-blooded and warm-blooded mammals and reptiles. They build twig, bark, and leaf nests high in the tree tops.Proboscis Monkey: Proboscis Monkey They are chestnut red with white on their bellies and their faces. Some of the animals in the Umbrella Layer are:Three-toed Sloth: Three-toed Sloth They work upside down on the trees and seldom come down to the ground. They are very slow in movement. They have very small ears and tails. Their hair is long, gray, and coarse. Toucans: Toucans Toucan live in Central and South America. Toucans use their huge bill to attract mates. The largest toucans are 25 inches long. They eat mainly small fruits.Spider Monkeys: Spider Monkeys They have long tails, slender limbs and great agility. Lives in Southern Brazil and Central Mexico Their fur is gray to brown. They eat fruits and nuts. They are eaten for their flesh.Porcupines: Porcupines Porcupine use their quills as a means of defense.
