Es un arbusto perenne de hasta 6 m de altura , cuyos frutos presentan pelos gruesos y espinosos y que al madurar se abren . Sus semillas son la fuente de un colorante natural utilizado en alimentación denominado annatto. Se emplea en quesos , margarina , pescado ahumado , arroz y también como condimento de cocina .
