Caren Tacher ctacher@hotmail.com What’s Going On… : What’s Going On… Do you spend time wishing parts of your body looked different? Are you unhappy with your reflection in the mirror? Do you skip meals? Do you ever feel out of control when you eat? What’s Going On With Me? : What’s Going On With Me? What is disordered eating? Disordered eating is when a person’s attitudes about food, weight, and body size lead to very rigid eating exercise habits that jeopardize one’s health, happiness, and safety. Statistics : Statistics Eating Disorders affect 5-10 million American and 70 million individuals world wide. (Crowther, et al. 1995) The most common behavior that will lead to an eating disorder is dieting (AABA, 1998) It is estimated that currently 11% if high school students have been diagnosed with an eating disorder. (ANAD) 15% of young women have substantially disordered eating attitudes and behaviors. (National Eating Disorder Screening Program) 81% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat. 51% of 9 and 10 year old girls feel better about themselves if they are on a diet. (Mellin et. Al, 1992) Listen To Your BodyEat when you are hungry. Stop when you are full. : Listen To Your BodyEat when you are hungry. Stop when you are full. Listening to your body is being able to detect when you are hungry. Next, be able to recognize when you have had enough. Last, the key is moderation, nothing in extremes. Healthy Eating… : Healthy Eating… Eat what you want, when you are hungry. Stop when you’re full. And eat exactly what appeals to you. Do this instead of any diet, and you’re likely to maintain a healthy weight and avoid eating disorders. Every Body Is Different : Every Body Is Different To make it simple, remember these keys to an ideal body: How To Talk About Eating Concerns… : How To Talk About Eating Concerns… Establish a safe environment. Explain the situation. Educate with the facts. Five Ways To Love Your Body : Five Ways To Love Your Body Think of your body as a vehicle to your dreams. Create a list of all the things your body lets you do. Walk with your head held high, supported by pride and confidence in yourself. Don’t let your weight or shape keep you from activities you enjoy.
