Actually, you are matter too! Matter falls into three main different categories, solid, liquid, and gas. Solid, is matter that has very tight molecules. Liquid, is matter that doesn’t have molecules that are very tight, but they also don't have very loose molecules. Liquid can also take the shapes of any container you put it in. Gas is matter that has very loose molecules, that are very separated from each other. Matter Experiment : How do you make matter move from different forms to different forms? Well first you start with an ice-cube, which you know is a solid. Then, you heat the ice-cube so it will melt into a liquid, which is known as water. If you take that water and boil it, it will soon turn to gas, which is the same as water vapor. Matter Experiment Thermal Expansion : Did you know that if you put something in very cold water like liquid nitrogen, it will shrink? After that, if you put it in hot water, it will expand to the regular size it was. Why does this happen? Well because the molecules get tighter when they get extremely cold. Thermal Expansion Thermal Experiment : To prove my point about when you freeze things, they decrease in size, I’ll tell you an experiment. Take wood with a hole in it, and take a small ball, that cannot fit in the hole. (The ball must be small though) Then tie a string to the ball, so that next you can dip it into liquid nitrogen. Leave it in there for about, 10-15 minutes. Once times up, take the ball out of the liquid nitrogen and see if the ball fits in the wood now. It should, but if it doesn’t, try to keep it in the nitrogen for a longer time. Thermal Experiment Molecules : Molecules are known a very, very small particle, also it is the smallest amount of matter you can have. Molecules are made up of at least two atoms, which are smaller than molecules. If you take a bouncing ball and squish it, do you know why that happens? Because the molecules allow the ball to squish. Molecules Liquid Nitrogen : Liquid Nitrogen You might think that if you want to carry liquid nitrogen around, you would just put it in any container, but your wrong. Liquid Nitrogen is very special, and if you put it in any container, once you put the cap on, it will pop right back open. Even if you put a cork on a bottle with liquid nitrogen, it won’t stay. Explanation : Why can’t the cap or cork stay on the bottle, even if you try you hardest to push it in? Well, its because the bottle will turn warm and heat the liquid nitrogen. Quickly, it will turn into a gas, and when the gas get bigger, or expands, it will soon pop the cap open. Explanation Credits : Everything in here, I learned from the Franklin Institute. John, from the institute showed us these cool experiments. Thank you John! Credits You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
