Courage means to be brave. Dictionary.com Courage : Courage Pg.1 “Matt stood at the edge of the clearing for some time after his father had gone out of sight among the trees.” From the opening of the story we learned Matt’s dad had left him alone in the wilderness. Even though Matt was alone, he displays courage by agreeing to guard the house while his father is gone. Courage : Courage Pg.23-25 “Cautiously he put his fingers on the edge and gave a slight tug. “A good sized piece of bark broke off into his hands. With it came the bees. With a furious buzzing they came pouring from the broken hole." Another example of courage, Matt had courage to get honey from the bee hive, because he could have been stung over and over again and possibly get very sick or even die. Or the bees can attack him and he could fall from the tree and could get very hurt. That is bad because there is no doctor around in the wilderness. Courage : Courage Pg.31 Another example of courage: Matt had the courage to teach Attean how to read but Attean refused to be taught how to read. Matt was afraid to teach Attean how to read because, Matt thought he wouldn't be a good teacher. Attean thought it was a waste of time to learn reading, and Matt and Attean did not like each other. He thought it was a waste of time because he said, “Nda!” Also Attean stalked out of the cabin with a “Black scowl.” Courage : Courage Pg.57 Attean had the courage to teach Matt the Indians signs. This was courageous because there was a chance that he would tell the other English men the code. “Indian make sign,” Attean said. “Always make sign to tell way. Matt must same. Not get lost in forest.” Courage : Courage Pg 59. Attean had the courage to teach Matt how to make a bow. Matt said, “I need a bow.” “With a bow and a little practice, Matt thought now, he might get a duck for himself or a fish.” So then Matt can kill animals with his bow and arrows because he lost his rifle. Attean shows courage here because by giving Matt the superior quiet, weapon technology he takes the risk by teaching Matt a Native American skill. Also Attean takes a risk with Matt because he could share it with other Englishmen. Fear : Fear Pg 1. The story begins with Matt being left alone by his father. Matt is afraid of being left alone in the wilderness. He is afraid because; “ Matt stood at the edge of the clearing for some time after his father had gone out of sight among the trees.” The wild animals could be a threat to his safety. Other Englishman may try to steal his supplies. Native Americans may be around. Fear : Fear Pg. 23-25- “A good sized piece of bark broke off into his hands. With it came the bees. With a furious buzzing they came pouring from the broken hole." Matt was afraid of the bees attacking him when he took their honey. He knows that bees can sting him and he risked angering many bees. The bee hive is high up a tree and he could fall after being distracted by the bee stings. If he gets hurt no one can help him because he is alone. Fear : Fear Pg31. Matt was scared to teach Attean how to read because Attean was making a fussy fit about reading. Attean said, “Nda!” Also Attean stalked out of the cabin with a “Black scowl.” Attean was mad about learning how to read because he thought it was a waste of time. So if he does not want to read and when the white people want to take over their land he will not know how to read English signs. Fear : Fear Pg72-73 Matt was afraid of the bear. He was afraid because he thought that he could be dinner to the bear. Matt was so scared that his legs were “Frozen” and the bear was “Three bounds away." So when Matt’s family comes home and can’t find Matt they will be worried about him. Summary : Summary The book Sign of the Beaver is about Matt staying alone in the wilderness because his father has to leave to get his family to bring to the cabin. Then when Matt goes to a bee hive and gets stung by a swarm of bees. Then an Indian, Saknis, comes to rescue Matt. Then Saknis tells Matt to teach his grandchild, Attean, how to read. Then Attean and Matt become friends. Then Matt becomes a skill full hunter and Attean sort of learns how to speak English. Attean said to Matt, “You are my brother.” The End : The End Thank you for watching our PowerPoint. If you have any questions ask Bryan, Saikiran, Cody, or call 1-800 Beaver.
