Pride :

Pride By Nick, Keita, and Sulaiman

Sign of The Beaver :

Sign of The Beaver is a book about a boy named Matt who is left alone to protect his family’s claim. When he is alone, Matt meets Indians, who help him survive. One of the Indians are named Attean who is one of the main characters in the book. Matt’s family is also delayed because of disease. Sign of The Beaver is a book filled with pride which is the theme we are doing. Sign of The Beaver

Theme Explained :

Theme Explained Pride is when you basically feel proud. When you have accomplished a difficult feat the feeling you have is called pride. In the book, pride comes up a lot, in places of where Matt and Attean learn new things.

If Pride Wasn’t an Issue in the Book, What do You Think the Book Would Be Like? :

If Pride Wasn’t an Issue in the Book, What do You Think the Book Would Be Like? We think that Matt and Attean would be able to accomplish more when pride was not an issue, than they did when pride was an issue in the book. For example, if Attean hadn’t been so proud he would have been able to learn how to read, like his grandfather had wanted him to.

How Does Pride Help You? :

How Does Pride Help You? Pride helps you in life because it can help build your self-esteem. Also it will keep you from doing horrible, embarrassing things. Also pride makes you take on new challenges. For example you can get ahead of the class and get good grades and increase your pride. You gained more pride in this example and you took on a new challenge, so we can conclude that pride is helpful.

How Can Pride Hold You Back? :

How Can Pride Hold You Back? Pride can hold you back because it can stop you from asking for help when you need it. This is bad because you will probably never learn the thing you had trouble on. In the book, pride also holds Matt and Attean back from learning new things.

Slide 8:

Matt was grateful to Attean and Sakness for saving him from the bees. Quote:“ I’m grateful to you” he said finally. “ It was a very lucky thing you happened to find me.” Page #27 Attean was proud that he could make a trap to catch animals and not put a hole in them. Quote: ” How did you kill that rabbit?” he asked, pointing to the offering Attean had thrown on the table. “ There’s no bullet hole in it.” “ Indian not use bullet for rabbit.” Page#39 Attean was furious that someone kneeled down to a white man!!! Quote: “Nda!” he shouted. “ Not so.” Page#43 Attean’s Pride Part 1

Attean’s Pride Part 2 :

Attean’s Pride Part 2 Attean said that his dog was good for nothing. Quote: ”piz wat” Attean said.“ Good for nothing. “ No good for hunt” Attean’s voice was full of pride when he said that.” Page#53 Attean was proud when he was telling the story of the bear fight. Quote: “ As Attean spoke, the Indians urged the boy on with grunts and shouts of approval and pleasure. Attean tensed his body.” Page.#80 Attean was too proud to do squaw work. Matt had to do squaw work to live. Do you think that if Attean was the one left alone he wouldn’t live because he was to proud?

Matt’s Pride :

Matt’s Pride Matt was proud that he could finally build a trap to catch squirrels and other animals. Quote: “After Attean had gone, Matt managed to make two more snares. They were clumsy things, and he was not too proud of them.” page#40 Matt thought that he could have made a fire. Quote: “ I could have done that myself, Matt thought. In fact he had it many a time, but he had not realized that he could use a common stone as well as his flint.” Page #49

Matt’s Pride Continued…. :

Matt’s Pride Continued…. Matt was proud because with a magnificent stoke of luck he caught a rabbit with his bow and arrow. Quote: “ Matt was in fine spirits that day, because he had managed by a magnificent stroke of luck to hit a rabbit with his bow and arrow.” Page #71 Attean told Matt that the squaws were making a feast with a bear, and he was invited. Quote: “ Not war paint,” Attean answered. “ Squaws make feast with bear. My grandfather say you come.” Matt hesitated, unable to believe his ears. It took him a moment to realize that this was actually an invitation.” Page #77
