Central Ohio Lineworker Training :Central Ohio Lineworker Training Provides professional training to utilities Established through relationship between OREC and MTC Apprenticeship program for Rural Electric Cooperatives across the state of Ohio First class began October 14, 2004 Realized need for a different program for those wanting in the trade

Basic Lineworker Training :Basic Lineworker Training Admission to the testing process will be on a first-qualified, first-served basis based on the following: 18 years of age (upon graduation) High school graduate/GED 2.0 minimum GPA DOT physical examination Valid driver’s license Resume and cover letter Application and initial fees

Basic Lineworker Training :Basic Lineworker Training Student will be subject to the following testing: Diagnostic Applicant Productivity Profile test Aptitude test Pass/Fail 2 day physical skills test We don’t want your money unless we know you will make it through the school Upon successful completion of the physical skills test, the student will be eligible to enter into limited enrollment process


APP Test :APP Test This online assessment is designed to help measure attitudes toward theft and drug abuse, as well as interpersonal relations and other attitudes that may affect on-the-job productivity. Are you employable?


Aptitude Testing :Aptitude Testing Timed Verbal Form Judgment and Comprehension Arithmetic Untimed Survey of Personal Values Mechanical Concepts APP and Aptitude testing taken on same day with post test interview


2 Day Physical Skills Test :2 Day Physical Skills Test Will you be able to climb wood poles? 75% Pull up transformer Pull wire using hoist Set up extension ladder and tie off Dig hole and tamp back in Build crossarm on ground


2 Day Physical Skills Test :2 Day Physical Skills Test Shave wooden poles Use brace and bit to drill hole Fuse change out Install crossarm on pole Run handline


2 Day Physical Skills Test :2 Day Physical Skills Test Requirements for passing grade: Reach top of 40’ pole using free climbing method on day 2 using fall arrest Average of “3” on all scores Do not cut out more than three times on day 2

Career Description Electrical Lineworkers :Career Description Electrical Lineworkers Install, maintain and repair electrical lines that lead from the generating plant to customers’ homes Usually work in crews of 2 – 5 people Work outdoors in all kinds of weather Work on overhead and underground facilities May be required to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends May be on call 24 hours a day or week at a time Will travel to help other areas to help repair damaged systems


Duties and Responsibilities :Duties and Responsibilities Attaching equipment to poles on ground Climbing poles or using bucket truck to install equipment aloft Stringing and sagging line conductors between poles Operation of various types of switches Performing preventive maintenance checks Splicing conductors and related wiring to connect lines, transformers and electrical apparatus Reading and interpreting service orders and circuit diagrams Repairing or replacing lines or equipment

The Program :The Program Classes run Mon-Fri 8AM -5:00PM Classroom work mixed with field work Two week climbing certification Two weeks at MTC Three weeks at COLT Field Unprecedented 5:1 student to instructor field ratio


The Program :The Program First year of apprenticeship program lures employers which are clients 20 College Credit Hours Blended course with 6 weeks of training at home including 27 online tests for 11 total weeks


The Program :The Program We utilize the following books: Lineman’s and Cableman’s Handbook Guidebook for Linemen and Cablemen The Lineworker’s Rigging Handbook Transformation for Lineworkers


The Program :The Program Basic skills taught including bucket truck and digger derrick training Teaching the distribution component of the industry Employers are invited in the second to last day of training to observe

The Program :The Program Two things very important to your participation in the program: Should be willing to relocate or travel; you will limit your employment opportunities tremendously if you limit it to working in hometown area. CDL requirements; you will be required to have a class A CDL. We will ask you to at least possess a class A permit upon graduation from the program.

Class A CDL :Class A CDL CDL – commercial driver license Class A needed to drive trucks and haul pole and wire trailers Training not required but very helpful Will need to pick up permit packet at BMV Packet good for one year Permit good for six months Permit needed for $2000 training


Job Outlook :Job Outlook Power Lineworkers held more than 120,000 jobs in the U.S. in 2008 Large percentage of workforce retiring in the next five years, leaving a large vacancy nationwide.


Wage Considerations :Wage Considerations Lineworkers average an annual salary of $60,000 throughout the U.S. With overtime, lineworkers can make more than $100,000


Wage Considerations :Wage Considerations Journeyman linemen make anywhere from $20 to $35 per hour in this region Entry level apprentices generally begin at 40%-50% of journeymen’s wages Frequent pay increases over a period of approximately four years
