A SAMINAR ON COMPUTRE VIRUS

Slide 4:

A bit of History - The concept of a computer virus was first imagined in Bell lab since 1949, before computers became common. In 1949, computer pioneer John Von Neumann wrote a paper titled “Theory and Organization of Complicated Automata.” In this paper, Von Neumann write a computer program that could be self replicating and thus predicted today’s self replicating virus programs. The theories of von Neumann came to life in the 1950s, at Bell Labs. Programmers there developed a game called “Core Wars” where two players would unleash software “organisms” into the mainframe computer, and watch as the competing programs would vie for control of the machine just as viruses do today. In the real world, computer viruses came to the fore in the early 1980s, coincident with the rise of the very first personal computers. These early viruses were typically spread by users sharing programs and documents on floppy disks a shared floppy was the perfect medium for spreading virus files.

Slide 6:

A virus is program that is designed to self replicate, make copies of itself and distribute the copies to other files of programs or to reduce the processing power of computers. Each virus has an infection programming . Many viruses also have a trigger to conduct they executed, which usually involves user interaction (e.g., opening a file, running a program.

Slide 8:

It is a program that scan e-mail, hard disk, removable devices (i.e.., Pen drive, CD, DVD ,etc) and detect viruses, prevent access to infected files and often recover the infection .

Slide 9:

Slow down email - Viruses that spread by email, such as Sober , can generate so much email traffic that servers slow down or crash.. Use your computer to attack websites - My Doom used infected computers to flood the SCO software company's website with data, making the site unusable (a denial of service attack). Corrupt data - The Compatible virus makes changes to the data in Excel spreadsheets. Delete data . The Sircam worm may attempt to delete or overwrite the hard disk on a certain day. Disable hardware . CIH , also known as Chernobyl , attempts to overwrite the BIOS chip on April 26, making the computer unusable. Display messages . Cone-F displays a political message if the month is May.

Slide 10:

Install an anti-virus software program to guard against virus attacks. Do not open e-mail attachments if you do not recognize the sender. Download files only from reputable Internet sites. Be careful when exchanging data or other media with friends. Scan hard drive for viruses monthly. Not clicking on suspicious Web browser popup windows . Not disabling the additional security control.
